I tried on a pair of these but found them tight across the toe-box. Do they ‘give’ at all once broken it?

No I have worn mine for almost 9 months and the toe box is as rigid as ever. I took the advice to order a half size bigger which compensates for the rigid for box.

Not sure I never had to use it.

Where it’s says size next to the uk size is this US? Or size that the same as the chart as uk?

On the size chart on the Amazon website, it lists the US sizes next to the UK sizes, and the columns are clearly labelled. However, I'd be very careful about the size charts. I find that Salomon's sizings are very small - their UK 12 is closer to a UK 11, and I needed a 13.5 to fit my nominally size 12 feet. If in doubt, go up a size from your normal sizing.
