With a ready supply of one-liners and a delightfully retro sense of fashion, Fran Drescher (TV's "The Nanny") provides the who, what, when and wear of this funny and smart comedy about a ruler from a land of tyrants and kings -- and a hairdresser from Queens. Eager to make her way in the world, hairdresser Joy Miller (Drescher) gets her chance when she's sent to a modern once-upon-a-time land called Slovetzia to tutor the three children of gruff, widowed dictator Boris Pochenko (Timothy Dalton). Joy thinks she's been hired as a beautician. Boris thinks she's been hired as an able science teacher. Science or not, chemistry of another sort begins to work its magic. Joy's spirited openness blows the cobwebs off tradition-bound Slovetzia and her resourcefulness gives Pochenko's heart a makeover...or does it? The best way to find out is to make an appointment with The Beautician And The Beast!

So happy to have found this!
I wasn't even born when this came out, lol, but I'm thrilled it's on Amazon Prime. Beauty & the Beast is my favorite fairytale, and I stumble upon adaptations I've never seen before all the time. It's wonderful, but this one takes the cake! My favorite non Disney adaptation. It's cute and funny and wholesome, in the sense there's nothing graphically sexual and no cursing, but still very much romantic and enjoyable. To be honest, it's more of an equal mixture of The King and I, The Sound of Music, with just a dash of Beauty and the Beast, but BATB is definitely the more marketable of the three, and with a play on words like "beautician", they just had to. The leading lady was hilarious! That New York accent killed me. Not at all what I was expecting! I loved her total confidence and honesty, and amazing flashy fashion sense. I wish I could have been born just a bit earlier, so I too could have appreciated such bold ensembles, lol.The romance was adorable - Timothy Dalton really sold it for me! I've loved his gruff, passionate acting since Jane Eyre. The terrible eastern european accents could not deter me in the slightest. I think there could have been more interaction with the kids as a whole, considering what she was hired to do there - but I think they did well for the time they had. I did not really like or understand the oldest daughter's love with the rebel guy who was stirring up trouble. I think I'd be a *lil* more concerned about what that "patriotism" meant for my family's wellbeing than with my love life. I feel that was the one area the heroine butted in more than she should have. The kid could have been a terrorist for all she knew. I wouldn't be advocating for his freedom till I knew all the facts. This film was hilarious, and I found myself laughing and snickering in my bed at Joy's antics. Her and that dang chicken! The contrast between her Northern US brass and Boris' uptight ways was delightful. This movie's definitely a keeper! I'll probably invest in the DVD. I'd say it's appropriate for all ages - though there are a few kissing scenes and other suggestive bits, but nothing to do with sex. An enjoyable "girl's night" movie, for sure.

Is it the worst film I've ever seen... or the best?
Let us get one thing straight- this film is not to be taken seriously. Those who do will think it the most pointless waste of time, talent, money and hairspray ever created. However, if you are spending an afternoon with a group of girl friends and a big lot of chips 'n' dip, it is pure genius. The story has been described variedly by my friends as "Stalin meets Janice from 'Friends'", "Sound of music if they'd been pro-nazi", and "You can change any man, even an evil dictator". Basically, a sweet and hapless New York beautician (with appauling dress sense) finds herself employed as a governess to the children of Stalin-esque dictator Timothy Dalton, who is very growly and relies greatly on the Cult of Personality. At first they clash quite dramatically, most notably over the relationship his eldest daughter has with a young revolutionary. After a while though, the contept turns to desire, the snide remarks to flirty comments, and the whole thing goes through the motions of your average romantic comedy. What sets it apart from most other Rom-Coms is the amazing (and rediculous) setting. I mean, it's all very well having two people in the opposites attract scenario, but when ones a tyrannical dictator it pushes the boundaries of sanity. In here, to me, lies it's genius. It could be seen as a encapsulation of the east-west culture shock. Or it could be seen as a laugh.I would highly recommend this film. In a world of bland romantic slush, this somehow is sublimely rediculous.
