Can an adult sit on it?

Yes, should hold a normal adult

Why won't the top close? The hinges keep it open at 60 degrees and when we try to close it, we hear the wood strain, like it's about to break.

It sounds like the hinges are in their locked position, which would prevent it from closing if the case. Try 1) open the top, all the way. 2) push the center of the hinges firmly in the opposite direction from where the are currently… Those hinges have 2 settings, locked and unlocked. Hope this helps.
