Just a Minute: A Trickster Tale and Counting Book

My wife fell in love with Snr Calaveras at a showing of the author's art. The art is distinctive and whimsical, the story touching and it makes for a good counting book for toddlers.

This quickly became a favorite of mine as well as my students. Yuji ‘s stunning illustrations and cleverly told story keeps us reading it again and again.

I enjoyed this book immensely! I bought it after reading the review that called it an "aberration." I found nothing about it abhorrent. It was beautifully illustrated and the story was fun to read. I liked the introduction of the spanish numbers. This story was a great way to introduce kids to a new language and culture (Grandma makes tortillas, fill pinatas and Senor Calavera's head is decorated like day of the dead skulls.) My young nieces loved it and thought Grandma Beetle was quite clever...

Wonderful story and love that it teaches my preschooler to count! Sr Calavera is cartoony and friendly, not scary at all. It became one of his favorites.

Terrific fun for me and my four-year old. This book is funny, sweet and packed with lush illustrations. I can't wait to see more form Yuyi Morales. Her most recent illustration work, that I know of, is Sherman Alexie's _Thunderboy, Jr._, another fantastic book, but I still hope to see more from Ms. Morales!

I bought this book for my daughter to use in her PreK classroom library. It was used but in good condition. My daughter said she would like to add other books by this author.

“Read it again!” my grandkids shout, and I happily do! They love Grandma Beetle's cleverness, the counting aspect, and finding Grandma's cat on every page.

My daughter teaches kindergarten in a highly diverse school.I have been working to add a wide variety of books to her classroom library. This one was a hit !!

Loved it! Such an enchanting book featuring a trickster granny and Senor Calavera. The illustrations are really beautiful and the text is funny and moving. A big hit with my 3 year old who loves all things Day of the Dead!

ある日の夜明け、ビートルおばあちゃんはノック音を聞く。ドアを開けると痩せこけた訪問者。彼は帽子をとってお辞儀をすると、一緒に来るようおばあちゃんに合図する。「ちょっと待ってくださいな」おばあちゃんが取った行動は… 読めばすぐに訪問者が何を意味しているかわかる。そしておばあちゃんはその訪問者さえ楽しませてしまう。おばあちゃんの大きさに訪問者も読者も魅了される。 深い本だ。ほとんど知られていないのが惜しい。

Lovely book introducing concepts of the afterlife and of counting and Spanish language. There is another book after this one featuring the alphabet, which is also gorgeous and fully recommended to couple with this one, called Just in Case, by the same author.
