it has a expansion valve. I don't know about 1234yf

No. its set up with 4 vent outlets. if you wanted you could run a vent outlet to your windshield and blend the hot/cold air to use it as a defrost.

Is this a stand alone unit?

no, this is only about 1/2 of a system. you still need a condenser core and a compresser
