Hardcore Primer for Serious Projects - Just Give It Time to Do Its Thing
If you're in the trenches working on real metal projects, this Seymour self-etching primer should be on your shelf. It bites into bare metal like a champ and lays down a solid base for welding or topcoating, but you’ve got to treat it right. Here’s the deal: This stuff isn’t your average rattle-can spray. It needs time to cure properly. Sure, it's dry to the touch in under an hour, but if you're planning to weld on it, do yourself a favor and wait a full 24 hours. Try to jump the gun too soon, and you'll get a little flame show when you strike an arc. Ask me how I know. Once it’s fully cured, though? It welds beautifully. Smooth arcs, no drama, no weird burn-throughs or splatter. Just clean, dependable results. But remember, this is a primer, not a miracle coating. It’s not designed to take abuse or resist solvents on its own. If you're spraying it in a spot that sees wear, solvents, or contact, make sure to topcoat it. Otherwise, it’ll wipe away or flake off easier than you’d expect. That’s not a flaw, that’s just the nature of self-etching primers. Bottom line: this is a killer value for a weld-through primer. I’ve gone through multiple cans on different projects: chassis work, brackets, patch panels, and it’s never let me down. Just respect the dry time, topcoat where needed, and you’re golden. Seymour knows what they’re doing with this stuff. Highly recommended.

It Works!
I was skeptical at first, but it is actually a pretty good product! I used this on my 1976 C10 truck bed after I sanded it down to bare metal. I needed to fill some holes but I wasn’t ready to do it the same night. I came back the next night and welded in the holes without a problem. I will definitely be ordering more of this for my other trucks I’m working on.

Good primer
worked very well so far, sprayed nice, stuck well to sanded and prepped surface. Welded through nicely (as nicely as can be expected) should hold up well. Dried faster than expected, and kept work flow going.

Primed and Ready
This is my go to primer for everything. Quality is there and covers real well. Can be used without cleaning the surface after priming if you’re going to weld. Definitely tough stuff, painted outside A/C grate and left it unpainted for quite a few years and stopped rust in its place.

Works great for MIG and stick welding, great adhesion, not great for spot welding
Easy arc and good puddle for MIG and stick. Worked OK on thin (<1.2mm) spot welding. Forms slack inclusion on >1.2mm spot welds, spots come apart. Burns out when you weld, you'd need to clean and reapply after your weld is done.

Works well for welding
This works great for welding. A must have if you are working on doing patch panels. Great coverage easy to use and lays down smooth. Great adhesion and great value for the money.

I had never used weld through primer before (didn't know it existed really!) and I was very pleased with the result. Sprays out like any other primer/paint and dries very fast so you don't have to wait long before welding. Welding through this primer doesn't cause expensive smoke or spatter in fact the resulting welds are quite clean, highly recommend.
