Review: Excellent Book. - This is a very good companion for anybody learning to teach English, as well as a reference book for practising teachers as it is small enough to carry around on a daily basis. This book is packed with information about teaching strategies, learning a second language, presenting grammar, professional development, planning lessons, in fact every aspect of teaching English as well as advice on written assignments for the CELTA course. I only wish I'd bought this book when I did my CELTA course! It would've put everything more into perspective. I highly recommend this book! Review: Re: Worth it if you like an overview and reduce the unknowns - Good book for a good overview of the CELTA course. I completed the IH London course recently and it hasn’t changed for many years. Note- The intense course really is intense. You will hear and see this observation in many places, don’t discount it as hyperbole. I have done many academic courses and this required strategic planning and late night and early mornings. Good luck! I am earning money immediately following the course.😃

Tutors will be using some of the content in the training programme but it's great to review and reflect as it's a very practical
Valuable book to have to support what you're doing on the CELTA training course. Tutors will be using some of the content in the training programme but it's great to review and reflect as it's a very practical book. In short in gets to the point very quickly without going into theory that comes from the background reading. I'm really glad I bought it as you can tend to get bogged down by theory and this makes you think about practical teaching.

The book arrived within two days and is like it's just come out of the print shop's bindery
I meant to order the Trainer's Manual but having recieved this, the trainee's Book, I'll keep It as it fits in well with what I need to do the course. The book arrived within two days and is like it's just come out of the print shop's bindery.

Good book
Good book as an assistant to others but not a stand-alone type of book. Helpful in context of the course.

Not worth it
The book is for people who are actually attending the course. It's a long series of (more or less) interesting activities. Unfortunately those activities are not suitable for self study: if you want to make sense of the whole text you have to buy another book (the trainer's book) and get the answers to the many questions. And all ends up in a huge cost. Not worth it.

This book is great if you are about to study the CELTA course. It is like having the teacher 'in a book'. You could learn the CELTA content with this book alone if you have plenty of teaching experience in the ESL industry. For beginners, I would say this is a must-have. However, the only slight downside is that there are no answers given. It's full of exercises, but it's like having a school textbook with no answers which you then have to rely on the tutor to tell you the answers. During the course, they will give you similar exercises which you do with your classmates, but if you are looking for answers to these exercises, there aren't any. I did find this useful as a post course 'top up' and reminder of things that you should do in the ESL classroom, so it's still proving useful for me, especially with the stage aims and procedures!

I read this being already in the English teaching profession, and don’t intend to take the CELTA course. While no doubt very useful to a CELTA student, I found the content more of an overview to be of much practical use for me personally. However, I would recommend it to someone aspiring to be an English language teacher rather than someone who is already in the profession. The best part of the book was the section on warm ups. I picked up a few good ideas there.

If you, like me, are looking to get a head start on the CELTA course before it starts, this is not going to help you. This book seems like more of a workbook than an actual textbook. It has many thought-provoking activities but it uses terminology that I can only assume is explained in greater detail in the actual course. For example, an explanation of the different student levels in terms of capabilities or teaching strategies. That being said, I have some teaching experience and knowledge so I could fill in some gaps and I found the activities to be thought-provoking and helpful. There is also a lot of good advice. So don't expect to get the course for $30 in this book, and don't expect it to be of much help as a beginning educator.
