TROPICA® - Melon Tree (Carica papaya) - 30 SeedsWorth knowing: This fast-growing tree is perfectly suitable for bright and warm rooms. It can grow to a height of 2 m and lives to an age of 15 years. Within our latitudes the plant flowers and (sometimes) sets fruits after 3 to 4 years. The wood of the strong stem stays quite soft and the leaves are lobed multiple times.Origin: The plant is native in Middle and South America.Propagation: Seeds can be started indoors any time throughout the year. Leave the seeds to soak in water at room temperature overnight and place them 1 cm deep in moist seed starting soil. With temperatures about 25°C, the seeds germinate within 3 to 4 weeks. Germinated seeds should be kept somewhat dry then. Best is, to mist-spray the soil slightly.Place / Light: The Melon Tree loves bright and sunny places. During summer, it may also be placed in a warm outdoor position that is sheltered from wind.Care: Use standard soil mixed with 20% sand. Water on a regular basis but always leave the soil dry to the touch. Too much water will harm the Papaya in the way that it will lead to a yellowing and drop of leaves. Fertilize the plant every 2 weeks from May until October. The plant should be placed as warm as possible.Winter period: Place the Melon Tree in a bright, draught-free position, with temperatures between 12° and 18°C, and water less. The plant is able to produce many little, cream-coloured flowers during winter as well. A pruning of the soft wooden branches is possible.
