Atmospheric Korean horror. A group of young people are invited to the remote woodland home of an eccentric dollmaker, who has offered to make life-sized dolls in their image. As they wait their turn to model for the dollmaker, the group soon realise that the sinister dolls decorating the house are not as inanimate as they had assumed. It isn't long before the evil dolls come alive and start hunting down the hapless group, dispatching them in violent and inventive ways.

A very good film
Whilst this film may not be perfect, I think it has enough to warrant it's first 5 star review. The film is well acted, well filmed and has a good story to it. It's not particularly scary butit has a creepy atmosphere that makes it unsettling to watch at times. It also made me feel genuinely sad forone of the characters (this is not something that happens often!).I suggest you give it a watch and see what you think, it might not be your cup of tea but it's agood film and I think there is definitely something to be enjoyed within it.

Don't take your dolls to bed tonight
Yea a little on the scary side but maybe a little too obvious as what will happen in the end.... but don't be, you'll be amazed.

“...first impressions are very important for photos.” [Hong Jung-ki]
In this 2004 fantasy revenge horror a man fell in love with a woman and made a doll in her image but his love was so strong it gave the doll a soul so when the woman was found murdered and the doll-maker was killed by vigilantes, the doll remained by his grave for 60 years before she was discovered. As five individuals come together to have dolls made of them, the doll' soul seeks revenge. The premise for this is superb, but sadly, somehow it didn’t quite grab me. All the elements were there: a good location, decent plot, creepy music, beautiful women and hunky guys, it actually generated a few jumpy moments being quite intense throughout. I think a lot had to do with the long winded translation where everyone insisted on calling everyone by name as they talked to them –like it was a sales convention, I found I was name reading more than plot reading. The single disc loads to play, chapters, set up [stereo 2.0 default/5.1, subtitles on/off] and extras [making of, deleted scenes, 2 interviews, theatrical trailer and 5 other releases]. Rated 18, this has swearing but it’s not translated into the subtitles. There is no sex or nudity,it but does have intense scenes, gruesome moments and some very scary mannequins. Well worth a try but not quite top marks.

Excellent
A must for BJD (ball jointed doll) collectors, an absolute delight to see these dolls focused on so much. The plot is pretty transparent, and it's certainly not frightening, more jumps than frights. But I thoroughly enjoyed it and well worth buying to keep.

A poor addition to the new wave Asian Horror genre.
Having read the customer reviews for this film I decided to give it a shot, I wasn't expecting originality but imagined that the film would be a welcome addition to the genre and far superior to most contemporary western horror offerings. I have to say I watched the entire film with a bit of a grimace, and not because it was gruesome viewing, but because it had very little redeeming features.Firstly the premise sets up what could be an incredibly creepy setting with promising scares and in some respects it achieves this vaguely (the dolls hanging from the ceiling and walls are sinister enough) but when the shocks do come they just feel a bit, well... half arsed! There's no real impact when people are murdered, and the alive doll lacks the intimidation it supposedly possesses. Ultimately the storyline itself was also incredibly thin with little thought put into it, for instance when Mrs. Im the doll maker recounts her tale about finding the doll by the grave why does she decide to help it take revenge? There seems no reason that Mrs. Im would help commit murders unless there was a little more persuasion involved, and we are not led to believe she is totally possessed. It could be said that the soul of the doll inhabits her immediately but then why did the husband also go along with it? It seems to make links for convenience but without ever examining the motives of any of the characters. Indeed the arrival of the strangers to the mansion is also very flippant and the characters are flat and lacking in dimensions. The film sticks closely to the conventions of Asian Horror made famous by Ring, as I said I wasn't expecting originality, so what is my complaint? Original films are a hard feat to achieve so a film can be forgiven a well worn plot/events if it handles it in a slick way. Whilst films like Isola and The Ghost (other recent views in the genre) also fail to deliver original ideas what they do possess is style. The Doll Master is completely lacking style, the visuals aren't memorable or ambitious and ultimately it means that the dull story doesn't capture the imagination at all through any means.Ultimately the film just felt like it was going through the motions to churn out another J-Horror to put some cash in the directors pocket. It lacked heart and vision and proves that the genre is very fallible after all.
