From Academy award ®-winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton (Best Animated Film, WALL-E, 2008) comes John Carter — a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars). Based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic novel, John Carter is a war-weary, former military captain who’s inexplicably transported to Mars and reluctantly becomes embroiled in an epic conflict. It’s a world on the brink of collapse, and Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands. Stunning special effects, great characters and villains — and complete with extraordinary bonus features — John Carter is a heroic and inspirational adventure that will thrill you beyond imagination.Special Features: 360 Degrees of John Carter 100 Years In The Making Deleted Scenes with Optional Commentary by Director Andrew Stanton Barsoom Bloopers Audio Commentary - By Director Andrew Stanton and Producers Jim Morris and Lindsey Collins Review: A fine tribute to Edgar Rice Burroughs. - The Blu-ray disc is multi-region, with a great picture and sound quality. The extras are a bonus although I haven't dipped into them yet as I only received the disc today, but I'm sure they're very interesting. What I really want to say about this movie is that it truly is a fitting tribute to the great Edgar Rice Burroughs. Don't let the fact that it bombed at the box office put you off, it is a quality production and the story stays true to Burroughs classic John Carter stories, ie ... Plenty of action and no complicated stuff to worry about. Burroughs first John Carter novel, "A Princess of Mars" was written way back in 1912, the year the Titanic sank !! So these stories are not deeply technical or mind baffling clever, they are action/adventure stories with a science fiction twist.....and Burroughs did this very well indeed. So well in fact that he inspired just about every classic sci-fi writer you care to name and many many filmmakers too. A film's box office takings are not always an indicator of the value of a film, sometimes, as in this case, it's failure happens because a shallow public weren't informed or well read enough to realise that what they were being presented with was a tribute to a precious legacy of early science fiction writing. Do buy this film and enjoy it for what it is, a bold, colourful, loud, funny and exciting homage to a wonderful writer. Review: Never Judge a Film By The Size of the Flop - BLU RAY - I have a theory when I watch the films in my collection that are supposed to be rubbish because 'they did not do well at the box office'. It's about a fireworks display: Loads of people turn up and it's awful because the people doing it haven't spent enough, but it's a 'hit' simply because they take more than they paid. Then you get the ones where they spend loads, but don't make enough back to cover the budget. So you get a massive display. They just lose money. Does it make the film bad? Well, no, cos the 'display' is still good, yes? Just there were not enough people to see it. John Carter carries that like a millstone and I really felt I might be taking a chance when I bought it. But after the first half an hour, some of which takes a little bit to get going, the film is off. No spoilers, but some of the CGI characters wipe anything in the later Star Wars films off the map. The Tharks are SO realistic, you forget after a while you are watching CGI. Oh. And got to love the 'dog' - watch the film, you'll get it. Some might say it's not original: There is an arena scene VERY VERY similar to the one in Attack of the Clones. But bear in mind that this came first - not in film terms, but from the original book, written by the guy that wrote Tarzan. In fact Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future) was offered the chance to direct and said "Lucas picked the bones of that already". But this IS a PROPER story. And so this is a better film than any of Part 1, 2 or 3 Star Wars films. Taylor Kistch comes over as a dashing, charismatic hero and Lynn Collins is the perfect leading lady for the Dad's especially. Terrific fun and take my advice, ignore the box office.

A Hidden Gem
The first time I saw this movie was on Netflix, & I was pleasently surprised as I quite liked it. Then I saw it a second time on TV, & enjoyed it even more. Then I found out that the critics slammed the film, & that it wasn't popular with cinema goers only wiping it's nose at the box office. I find that incredibly hard to understand, as this is a good movie. I bought it on Blu-Ray to watch again, & I thoroughly enjoyed it yet again. I lent it to a mate (not telling him anything about it so he had no preconceptions), & he said it was the best film he'd seen all year. The CGI is spectacular for the most part, & the Tharks look utterly stunning. The story is great too, & the guy playing Carter does a damn good job. I think that this is one of the most underated movies of recent years, & that it will become a hidden gem to future generations. Give your eyeballs a treat to the 250 million dollars they lavished on this movie, & ignore all the miserable naysayers. This is retro science fiction/fantasy action as it's best.
