The Sewing Book New Edition: Over 300 Step-by-Step Techniques

I LOVE this book! I’m just now getting back into sewing and it’s been YEARS since I have done any. This book has become my reference bible! It is very well laid out, with amazing step by step photos for any and everything you may need to know while sewing. From tools, to using patterns, how to measure, fabric & thread types and uses, and EVERY machine/hand stitch needed, where and when to use them and HOW to do them! AMAZING! MUST HAVE BOOK FOR ANYONE WHO SEWS!

A very comprehensive book that I’m glad I added to my sewing library. It covers basic sewing equipment and tools, multiple techniques such as darts, tucks, pleats, gathers, collars, waistbands, sleeves, hems, edges, fasteners, mending, and even project patterns. The patterns are modern/trendy and not overly complicated and they include housewares, clothing, and storage so there is a good bit of variety to the patterns included.

If you are a beginner to intermediate level sewist and you frequently need to know how to handle a particular sewing issue, then this book is for you! For me, the best part is the hundreds of photos that are included next to each clear, easy to understand instruction. I no longer have to try to mentally visualize what the text is trying to describe. Whew! This clears up so much confusion and I get more accomplished. I read some of the few negative comments, and I can agree that it is not advanced enough to be considered a book for “tailoring”, but there are many books specifically for advanced sewing techniques. For everyone else, this is the best and probably only sewing book you need to have!

The illustrations are clear, but the instructions are general techniques and specific. This is a good book to teach you the basic and the correct way to complete your project.

I ordered this book because I'd been told it was an excellent reference resource. But I'll admit I wasn't altogether certain it would be worth my while. However now that I have it I understand what my friend meant. If you are a beginning sewer, this book has very clear, step by step, instructions with DK's always outstanding photographs to show you how to do most of the things you'll be doing whatever you sew. I'm particularly impressed with the clarity of the instructions, which is not something you can always count on in sewing directions. I, however, have been sewing for many years. (Okay decades.) So I'm pleasantly surprised to see that the book is comprehensive enough that I can use it when sewing things I don't do often. I even found a couple of techniques I haven't tried yet. One caveat: DK is a British company. While they've made an extraordinary effort to use vocabulary in use on both sides of the Atlantic, there are a few terms that don't match what we usually say in the US. So if you can't find something you want to do in the index, try looking through the general section for similar techniques. You'll probably find it.

I wanted a sewing book to gift to my granddaughter with the sewing machine I plan to give her (her first). This is almost like an illustrated textbook. It should be a good resource for her for years to come. I also bought one for my own library to have as a reference book.

This book is beautifully put together, contains tons of info and I wish I had bought it sooner as it would have saved me a number of sewing-related headaches. I have been sewing for a couple of years very casually and getting info online, but now I finally have a comprehensive resource that is written coherently. I strongly recommend!

As a beginner, I have been overwhelmed with the information that can be found online and wanted to find a comprehensive guide about sewing. Before buying it, I have been pretty much self-taught and have tried to work on some easier patterns (which would not go as expected). After buying this book, I haven't started a new project without looking into how elements of the pattern should be done. In my opinion, this book is a great beginner book that shows step-by-step how to achieve certain techniques. I am very happy that I bought it, and would without a doubt recommend it to other beginners. If you're more skilled, this might be a little to basic for you, but you can still use it as a guide on how to achieve certain things as the book is split into beautiful sections that make it easy to find what you need.

Not only is this a quality made book, but it's full of beautiful and useful visuals that really drive home the techniques and lessons the book teaches. I've been through a few sewing books and was disappointed at most of them. This is probably the best sewing book I could find for any beginner. In fact, even people who have mastered the basics could learn from this book. It has some great projects in it and has a picture or illustration to accompany every detail - super important to someone who learns visually like me!

At least for a rookie like me this is a fantastic book, it covers everything, and it is all described in both text and clear color photos, they explain all kinds of sewing subjects and after each one you get an example of how to use it in the real world. They explain different kinds of fabrics, how to interpret a sewing pattern, how to use different seams, how to use interfacing and on it goes, you can find pretty much anything in this book, again a fantastic book.
