Barakamon Vol. 15

This volume continues to depict Handa’s struggles to become a calligraphy teacher, as he realises the adult world is more treacherous without the financial support of his parents (a very relatable concept)! In Barakamon’s typical folksy-humorous style, there is a good amount of character development in this volume for our protagonist, as he embraces more of the islanders’ mannerisms and grows more understanding of the feelings of others.However, as a long time supporter of Barakamon, I have to fault the art in this volume. Yoshino’s art has been simplifying in style since volume 1- a welcome change, as her art at first was a bit rigid! However, in this volume it seems almost too cartoonish: I would argue that a lot of characters are losing their distinguishing factors, and specifically with Handa, his age is becoming more ambiguous due to Yoshino’s over simplification of his design leading him to look quite child-like. I’m not sure if this is due to the influence of her other series, ‘Handa-Kun’ (Handa’s hair has noticeably become less realistic in this series to match her prequel), but I personally feel the lack of artistic details and flourishes in this volume is a real shame.

If you can’t get enough of the Anime, this is great to read and experience this story in its original format.

Fantastic volume, as always. This series never fails to make me feel good, and quite frankly if you're 15 volumes in and reading this review, you know what to expect. Well, rest assure that the quality hasn't dropped yet. I'm going to miss the islanders until the next volume.
