As a biography, the film doesn't amount to more than the sum of its gritty scenes of smack use, violence, perversions (poor Bruno Kirby plays a lecherous coach who comes on to young Jim), and the usual scream-and-puke dramas that go along with a cold-turkey session. Director Scott Kalvert doesn't seem to realise that most people don't know who Carroll is and therefore can't possibly understand why they should care about his gutterball youth. DiCaprio, having nowhere to go with his performance but maintain Carroll's tailspin, is boring and redundant. Some kind of allusion to the literary and rock & roll life that follows the mess we're watching might have been helpful. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ I saw a clip on TikTok and I couldn’t find anywhere online to watch, so I decided to purchase the DVD — glad I did! The Basketball Diaries is intense and raw, following a young Leo as he navigates the highs and lows of youth in a tough city. The story pulls you in with its gritty realism and emotional depth without giving too much away. Definitely worth a watch for his performance and the powerful narrative.

A lost Gem
Great film, great condition. Another performance where Dicaprio should’ve won an Oscar. Incredibly intense and beautiful. Watch it, it should have more recognition.

Fantastic movie easily one of my favourite di Caprio performances shows a lot of range in this movie it's hard tough and emotional to watch great real life drama as a teen in America .

Read the book!
For anyone who has read the book, the film really does it justice. Although no film captures the books perfectly, Leo's performance was excellent. I would recommend that anyone who watches this film, also reads the book.

DVD rarity finally added to collection
Great film. Unmissable if you wish to explore Leonardo DiCaprio’s pre-Titanic exploits, of which there are multiple worth mentioning. Never released on DVD here in the Netherlands, so I’m happy to have finally found it at a reasonable price. Ordering process was easy and fine as usual and delivery time overseas leaves nothing to be desired. The state in which it arrived however, is a different story. Wrapped in nothing but an oversized paper envelope without any padding to protect from shock or other damage, the plastic case came out shattered… It did however fulfill it’s purpose in keeping at least the DVD disc and paper covers pretty much damage free, so my personal stock of spare cases solved the problem. Still, packaging care may be a point of attention for this seller. Other than that, I’m a happy camper.

A wonderful performance by Leonardo who makes you feel his emotional pain so intensely. I had never heard of Jim Carroll before I saw this movie. I would recommend this movie for anyone who is a DiCaprio fan. You won't be disappointed. More great cast ; Wahlberg and Bravo. M.Marr.
