Trireme Olympias: The Final Report Hardcover – January 31, 2012

Not at all what I expected. Rather than a summing up of what was done, it is largely a collection of engineering opinions. Glad I got it cheaply.

This is a collection of papers about the reconstructed 170 oared Trireme. Every paper is from a different perspective. Some of them are for the engineering minded. It is not an easy report to read, the papers are thought provoking. How fast could these boats travel, how did they withstand wind and waves, how long did they last, and how accurate is the reconstruction? These any many more questions I did not even think of asking are addressed. For anyone interested in ancient maritime history this is an essential book to have.
