This is the beginner's guide to growing fruit trees I've been looking for!
As a beginner in growing fruit trees, I didn't really know where to start and what the specific needs of fruit trees are as opposed to vegetables. The book has answered all of my questions so I now feel much more confident to give this a try. It's a clear step-by-step guide that removes all the guesswork. So if you're just starting out or you've been unsuccessfully trying to grow fruit trees for a while, then I highly recommend this book!

Beautifully written book
This beautifully written book covers everything you would need to know about successfully growing fruit trees. The knowledge shows no boundaries and tells you everything from selecting good root stock, placement, management through to pollination and long term care for a successful crop of fruit year after year.

Sophie McKay's writing is clear, well organized and well presented. She starts by giving you good ideas on deciding what to plant (what fruits do you like?) with what will work in your area, when, where and how to place the trees on your property (sunlight requirements, hazards to consider, etc.), how many years until a tree will bear fruit and estimated yields, and tools you will need. She explains orchard layout (spacing), and defines terms you will want to know and understand. She covers irrigation options, fertilizer needs and types, pruning strategies (including great step by step guides and a glossary), plus options for dealing with pests and diseases. You will learn about pollination needs, when and how to harvest and store your produce, and she even includes instructions on how to build an apple storage system. The book covers many types of fruit bearing trees, especially apples. Living in the south I would have appreciated more information on what was needed for winterizing in different zones, as this seemed to be geared more to colder weather areas. The container gardening information for dwarf trees was very helpful for me. There are questions to help guide your planning, plus charts (including harvest time charts), pictures, and my favorite the takeaways (quick summaries) at the end of each chapter. There is a truly impressive reference list provided at the end of the book. This book is a great reference to help you get started with an orchard or maintain what you already have.

Simplicity matters. As a beginner, this book proves to be your trusted friend, guiding you through the journey, giving you a chance to have a strong foothold of getting things done right, sharing the wisdom Sophie gathered from her childhood memories at her grandparents farm. In continuation to her early works, third book in the series reveals the insights of Mother Nature and the abundance it showers in simple, lucid language and nicely indexed.

Sophie has done it again! This book (and her others!) offer a fantastic range of information with this book covering a wide range of topics for growing fruit trees. There's an overview of how to plant, shape and have your trees flourish. There's some basic information on tree guilds, problem solving issues, information on making your soil type work for you and so much more. The only extremely minor criticism is like so many other books in this realm it is very northern hemisphere centric, but knowing that makes it easy to identify where the information varies (sun to the north instead of the south). I'd love to see more subtropical plants mentioned but in the end the author can (and should) only write about what they know! There are some fantastic illustrations throughout the book too. Definitely a book to add to the gardening shelf. Thanks Sophie!
