The Andromeda Strain

I saw the original film of the book years ago and thought it might be somewhat relevant to the present crisis. So I read the book for the first time. I've enjoyed other Crichton novels, such as Congo and Jurassic Park, and I'm glad , at last, to have bought and read this one. Recommended as a tale for our times.

i have just had delivered michael crichton, the andromeda strain. unfortunately, the printing itself is definitely of lower quality than the penguins I have bought before due text being less sharp and print thick. the pages appear to be of a photocopy quality on cheaper paper. very disappointed with penguin.

I love M. Crichton books. This one is bigger than usual, so took me a time to read. But gripping nevertheless. And as usual, Amazon gets them out quickly. I'm now onto his next book.

The Scoop VII satellite scoops up something nasty and lands in a small town in Nevada. As the whole town die apart from a new-born and the town drunk, the search is on for the cause and can it be stopped.It is written in documentary style as though recording a real event. The novel comes complete with a full technical introduction, acknowledgements to professional contributors from 'Project Wildfire' and a Reference section quoting scientific sources.This 'cinema verite' syle extends to the text itself with use of 'official' documents, maps,transcripts, charts and graphs. This is either a strength or weakness depending on your viewpoint as other reviews testify. Indeed Mr Crichton is aware of this himself in his intro, '..if the reader must occasionally struggle through an arid passage of technical detail, I apologise.'This novel hits you like a punch in the stomach and from then on I found it one long adrenalin rush to the finish.
