Lonely Planet China (Travel Guide)

A supermodern LP for a supermodern destination!! As an avid LP reader, I expected this recently released China edition to be much like the rest. BUT THEN I started flipping and it was a revelation. More photos, more routes, more engaging content. There's a section on every region, more suggested itineraries and far more detail on Shanghai and Beijing. The practical section at the back is a multicoloured gem. This LP is one of my faves and I can't wait to put my newfound knowledge into action.

I travelled to 4 cities and this book gave me what I needed to navigate them and their highlights in a short space of time. Also great for background and context and tips for travelling.

Very good book. Very informative just what i was looking for.

Do not bring to China. It has been taken by airport security as it is not considered politically correct because of some issues with the map. I was offered the chance to tear these pages I needed but it didnt look like a great idea considering I planned a big trip.

Planning a trip to NW China (and not having other guide books available), I ordered a Lonely Planet. For this area the book is totally useless. Almost no information outside of the basic. And, this only strengthens my preference for Rough Guide and (usually) Bradt Guide (though Lonely Planet city editions can be good). The dumbing-it-down structure is annoying, and seemingly aimed at the young people, who wouldn't be using a guide BOOK anyway. A real disappointment.

If you’re looking for information about sites to visit, I suggest you buy an older version of LP. I bought this latest edition - Aug 2025 - and the previous edition has much more info about Gansu province, which I’m visiting. LP is not what it was it seems.

Sehr detailliert, beschreibt auch andere Sehenswürdigkeiten als immer nur Peking und Shanghai.

La guía definitiva para conocer otros países, antes de este libro compré otros dos pero eran más experiencias personales que información útil.

Recibido en perfecto estado, al ser de Agosto 2025 está realmente actualizada. Han cambiado el formato de las guías, aún tengo que acostumbrarme a este nuevo concepto. Tiene cosas que me gustan más pero hay otras que menos la verdad. Extraño la breve parte en la que se hablaba de la historia del país.

Excellent wide overview of all major regional highlights across China. One major improvement would be the addition of metro map overlay on city maps. Challenge in planning is often knowing where metro stations are and where metro lines run..

As always with Lonely Planet, the book on China book includes tons of information, photos, and maps about this enormous country that will satisfy even the most discerning tastes! I also love history, and there's a lot of history in the book!
