T. Rex Tooth Excavation
I purchased this item for my 10 year-old son to do as a summer project. He loved it and has proudly displayed the replica tooth that he excavated. I have seen a number of reviews where people mention purchasing this for younger children (like around 5 years of age). I have no experience on using a kit like this with a child that young, but definitely felt like my son, being older, was able to take much more care and patience while working to get the "fossil" out of the "rock." Using a fair bit of water was key to softening the rock enough to use the tools without damaging the specimen. This does take some time and fine motor skills.Even after the tooth was freed, the specimen still needed to be scrubbed and we needed to use the "dental" type tool to scrape the reddish layer off of the top to reveal the ivory-colored tooth beneath. This seemed to take even more patience and skill than my son had, so I helped him finish it off. Again, lots of water seemed to be key here. The tools have a good feel (heftier, not flimsy plastic) and are sturdy enough for the task of excavating the fossil. Our T Rex tooth replica is a nice display piece for a child and I thought this kit was great for the price. We liked that the tooth seemed more like a "real" find than excavating a plastic dinosaur, like some of the kits on the market are.

Cheap! Not worth $10
Thought this would be so much fun for my daughter she has been obsessed with the digging sets and recently dinosaurs. So “Santa” brought it to her. She worked on it the day after Christmas and it did not take long to find and get the tooth! Ok awesome. The problem I have with the this product is the material of the tooth. It’s almost the same as the brick your digging in so it was broken before she even dug it out. Then we got it out and it broke when she was washing it off in the sink. Not worth $10 or the fact that this was the ONE thing she asked Santa for and she was so excited about and it breaks in the first 2 minutes she’s got it. Heart breaking for a mother!

cheap garbage - the tooth broke!
this is absolute garbage. do you see the picture of a broken tooth that another buyer posted. yep, that’s exactly what happened to us. this is CHEAP garbage. my son was so sad and cried. luckily i had some other dig sets that are not garbage on hand to make up for it. the tooth is so epically fragile that it will chip, crack, and break even if you are extremely careful. they need to make the tooth out of something much more sturdy.

Tooth is made of plaster and broke
My son asked for a T-Rex tooth for Xmas. I thought it would be fun for him to dig it up. We've used kits like this before and this has never happened. He can't dig with very much force because he's six, but in the process of excavation, the water seeped into the tooth and was barely distinguishable from the clay block it came in. It only has the thinnest shell over the plaster and came out in pieces. I assumed this would be a high-quality plastic or resin tooth, but it was cheap plaster. My son was in tears and I had to buy him a replacement tooth. Very disappointed.

Meh of a product
The tooth was cheap plaster that broke in half before it even came out and my son was chipping away gently.

Major disappointment
I purchased this for my nephew's birthday. I had purchased a triceratops tooth For Christmas and loved it. Unfortunately the tooth was in three pieces when we finally excavated it. Talk about disappointed boy and aunt!

Teaches patience
My son was really excited about this activity. He is 7 years old. It was hard for him to be patient while digging out the treasure, however it taught him to be patient and careful. Now he is the proud owner of a Dino tooth (replica) but still very exciting. I wish if did not say replica all over the box!

Big disappointment!
Not worth the money! My son was so excited to get this for his 6th birthday but when he finally unearthed the tooth it was broken into several pieces! Not worth the money and not worth my son’s disappointment after all the work he did to dig the thing out!
