Worth the effort
Not an easy book for me to read. It meanders along for the most part, coming to a crawl somewhere around 22% (on my Kindle) at which point I would have abandoned it were it not for my curiosity about where the characters were going. So I guess I was invested in them. It was worth getting over the slump - it's one of those books that make you think, on a whole range of aspects, from use of language and characterization to the big picture i.e. the debt white America owes to the people who were there when they got off the boats

A truly magnificent work
Quite extraordinary book vaguely describing the interwoven lives of different families over three( I think) generations. It's beautifully written with, as usual with Louise Erdrich, a large dose of American Indian spirituality. Although it doesn't contain what might be described as a storyline, I found it absolutely compelling and would consider it as one of Erdrich's best and one of the best books I have read for some time.

Beautifully written. I have been moved to tears many times in this book. Reading it makes you realise how badly we have lost touch with nature! Ethnic cleansing was the anti Indian policy. Shocking.

Touching and sensitive ...
Heart breaking story, love the threads that are woven through about the old ways. Earth connections and ancestors keep the story flowing...

Boring Boring
I read until 80% because I was interested in the plot happening with north dakota indians.Could not read more than 15 pages each time then I had to rest.About the 80% of the book I dropped it.And I felt myself stupid to have reached so far.Perhaps is a book for academics and critics but I am only a 63 years old reader.
