Great MPG meter if your car doesn't come with one
After driving a few rental cars with built-in MPG gauges, I can attest to the truth of the idea that real-time mindfulness of your driving style and its effect on your MPG will save you a few bucks. I decided to pick up the ScanGauge E to bring that same functionality to my 2007 Honda Fit.All in all, this little device does exactly what it says in a small package. Installation was easy, and the smaller size compared to other ScanGauge models makes it even easier to mount just about anywhere on your dash. I had a really hard time deciding between this one and the regular ScanGauge II since the price difference wasn't all that much, and I honestly kind of expected to regret going for the cheaper model, but that hasn't happened yet. You still get all the goodies like accessing your sensors (water temperature, speed, battery voltage, etc.) and reading/resetting trouble codes, so it definitely does the job for me.It does, however, rely on manual calibration with each tank, and despite my attempts to be consistent with every fill-up, etc., there's still up to a 20% margin of error on some tanks (this is rare; it's more like 7 - 10% offset most of the time). This may have more to do with my car's weird tank position and narrow filler pipe that can sometimes back up and incorrectly trigger the splash sensors, though, so your (gas) mileage may vary. The wonky calibration, however, is exactly where the supposedly "useless" graph feature becomes gold for me. No matter what my numerical reading is, I can see the overall relative trend of whether I'm currently increasing or decreasing my MPG and adjust my habits accordingly. In other words, even if the gauge isn't perfectly accurate, it's still precise enough to make a difference in my driving. As far as I know, only the E model offers the graph.I haven't actually bothered to calculate my overall gas savings after buying the ScanGauge, but it's definitely made a difference and I'm fairly sure it will pay for itself in savings. It's turned into somewhat of a "game" against myself to constantly beat my previous MPG, and while I don't always win, it has definitely changed my driving habits for the better. If nothing else, you simply won't believe how much gas you're (probably) wasting right now and what a big difference small changes can make.

Most informative gauges in the car
Alright so your probably reading this review because your looking to buy the scangaugeE; well im not going to tell you to buy it, im going to tell you what it does and hopefully convince you on this great product.DESIGNfirst off the design isnt the best but hey ya gotta do with what ya get cuz it doesnt match anything on the interior, other than the customizable screen color which is amazing and has a few very vivid colors in the spectrum which are the primaries, matching the color of the SG to my dashboard was a piece of cake and spot on.INSTALLATIONthe provided 6 foot cable was just the right amount to route from the OBD2 connector through under the dash to the driverside A pillar and behind the A pillar bezel to the headliner then over to the rearview mirror, where the scangauge sits. back to when i said the cable is just the right amount i mean like and inch worth of length left in my saturn L series. awesome :)THE GAUGESwell everything that the specs say it will read is true but is based on your car. everything reads for me except fuel pressure, but i didnt get it to read my fuel pressure so whatever. it gives me so much info on my car its amazingRESULTSi strongly believe i am driving better due to this gauge.the day i got it my AVG mpg was 16... Holy crap in a saturn ! after watching the instant MPG while driving under all conditions i am/was able to tone my driving habits to get better.so i started out with 16 mpg avg day one( driving like i would normally while acting like there wasnt a scangauge in front of me)day two 26 mpg avgthen so on i was getting 28 mpg avg for the weekup until recently my best was 29 avgBUT wait! theres more. tonight driving home i was able to attain 30.1 AVG MPG ( best so far, and probably all ill squeeze out of the 4cyl engine )it also tells you instant MPG so you know what your workin with at any given time. not to brag but my best with foot not off the pedal was 42.X MPG wow! when foot is off it goes up to like the 100'si believe this lil gadget has helped me learn my own car even better. ive owed it for almost two years and wondered why im always getting gas so often in a saturn. cuz i drive like i thought was efficient, guess not :(overall this gadget is awesome! and my gas needle is like never moving anymore, lol

Has its uses, but probably irrelevant for most
I have been mulling about looking under the hood of the engine management unit for a while, so after looking around on the Internet to see what was available, I decided to start with Scangauge.ScanGaugeE is a OBD/OBD-II scan tool by Linear Logic. It is the model geared to help improving fuel economy in the range of ScanGauge devices which connect to the ODB port in most cars (since 1996 for cars sold in the US, since 2004 for those sold in Europe). It fits both petrol and diesel cars (with different types of diesels). What I like:The data I found most useful is the trip cost screen, which also shows how much you spent in fuel for the whole day.As it's wired to the car, the device always works and doesn't suck battery power as some WiFi/Bluetooth adapters seem to do. Moreover, smartphone apps stop working when you receive a call and you end up having to restart the them, making data such avg speed or consumption since the beginning of the trip irrelevant. I'll skip the dangers of moving focus away from the road ahead in doing so ...What I didn't like:It needs a bit of set-up: not so much in setting engine size, fuel type, tank capacity etc., but rather in keeping information up to date for reliable fuel consumption informations, as you need to enter the details of the first tankful and then re-enter the information when refilling (which has to be done when the tank is at the 1/4 mark). It feels expensive for what it does and given the simplicity of the hardware. The display is very simple, probably the lowest resolution you can find because it only has to show digits and a simple graph. I'm sure some people will place some value on this, but aside from the fuel consumption, I'm not really interested in monitoring the temperature of the engine (the car already has its gauge) or the battery's voltage. Ditto for CO2.It's quite chunky and therefore a bit difficult to place neatly somewhere in my car without velcro stickers or similar. Considering the functionality, I have the impression it could be easily miniaturised a fair bit but I reckon it would cost the company too much to retool for the sales volumes it generates. The cable plugs in the back, which may or may not be an advantage. The windshield mounting kits I've seen seem a bit expensive (around £17 for a clip). To really benefit from the fuel monitoring and trip functionality, it needs to be constantly plugged in and fed fill up information at every refill. The manual describes the process for the first two fill ups, but to keep consistent results you have to always repeat the process. This means filing up the tank to the top every time, which I don't do always do (esp. if I'm driving a lot in town, where the weight of a full tank affects fuel consumption).Opinion:As I wrote the review, I realised I came up with more negatives than positives and therefore cooled down a lot from the initial excitement. On balance, I think such tool has more limited applications than I initially thought. If your car already has a trip computer such as many modern cars do, then this device is not going to be of much use. Certainly I cannot see a return on the £76 I spent on it. On the other hand, if your car has a simple dashboard or limited features in general, then this may make more sense. The capability of erasing fault codes without going to a garage is certainly useful, but there are several smartphone apps that do the same for less then £5. Spend £10-20 for the WiFi/Bluetooth connector and £10 for a decent app and you have most of what you need for half price or less. I would have probably kept it for £20-30, but £76 is too much IMHO so I returned it after a couple of weeks of use.

Tolles Teil

Fahrzeug ohne Wasser Temp. Anzeige ! NoGo
