It automatically turns on when the probe is released. There is a tinny button that converts the reading from F to C degrees. The is the only button that the device has. The LCD display is clear red and the digits are large and easy to read. The enclosure for the battery (one battery) is secured by a screw which is an excellent idea for this device, since it reduces the chance of accidentally dropping the battery cover and the battery. This adds sturdiness to the device. It is clearly a well-designed device. I did not yet test the accuracy or the speed of measurements.
