Great for cutting home carpet
I wasnt sure on this, although I own alot of great makita tools, the reviews were all over the place, I do alot of remodel work including carpet. I thought this might be good for cutting the carpet alot more exact than the razor method Ive always used. I was happily surprised how well it works. Cuts house carpet no issue at all. Always cut carpet upside down of course even with this tool. I just wish they made this in 18v like the rest of my makita tools.

Electric box knife. If you can afford it, it’s well worth the purchase.
This tool is the best ~$100 I’ve spent in a while. The box knife has been relegated to opening the boxes, and no longer for breaking them down. I immediately got to work on a pre-spring clean breaking down boxes for my parents and again at my own house. It’s not a chainsaw so yes some of the thicker cardboard will be a little effort, but it had no problems slicing through some double thick cardboard today. It will eat through Amazon boxes in seconds. The blade is constant self sharpening so the edge is always sharp, some of the other options had an integral sharpening stone but you had to engage it. The battery is on the plus side of adequate. After about 2 hours on the 2ah battery it needed topped. I went ahead an bought the 2 pack of the 4ah batteries so I can charge one and run the other one, although given my experience with it a single 4ah battery would be more than sufficient for most cutting sessions. The jaws aren’t very wide so it wont open some plastic packages, but it should at least give you a good start if there is a thin edge. Do you need it? Eh, depends on how much you cut down stuff for recycling and how much time you have. It makes it to where I can break down boxes into much smaller sizes much quicker, saving time and space. You can do the same with a box knife-I’ve done it, but it will take you at least 2x the time if not more.

Two uses and that’s all she wrote
I used this thing twice and the motor started to cease up. Stop and go, no longer continuous. Stay away from the frustration.

Tamed the Amazon box jungle
I get a LOT of amazon boxes and they pile up like a mountain. I needed a quick go-to tool for cutting them down. I HATE using a utility cutter because its too easy to cut yourself while free-holding the boxes. In general, with a knife, you are ALWAYS cutting toward yourself because you need leverage to press the knife into the cardboard. This Makita multi-cutter solves this problem because by its nature you are pushing the tool away. Much safer. In fact, i'm not sure you actually could cut yourself with this thing. The power and speed are more than adequate. Battery life is fantastic. Cutting flat cardboard is very easy. Cutting the flaps off of boxes is a little harder because you have to maneuver the small "mouth" of this thing into the fold of the flap and the adjacent flap gets in it way, Once you cut about an inch it zips through the rest of the flap. It will only cut single layer cardboard (typical shipping boxes). It won't cut through double layer (appliance) cardboard. Ergonomically, this tool is a little unwieldy due to its length. The safety switch that you must hold in with your thumb could be better designed. There are switches on both sides for lefties. In addition, search for the CANARY Corrugated Cardboard Cutter (DC-190F-1). It works GREAT for SAFELY opening boxes and cutting the box tape while breaking boxes down. Amazon also stocks replacement Makita 198604-1 1-5/8" Multi-Cutter Blades

Not as east as I had hoped, but it does work better than crushing heavy boxes
Cutting heavy cardboard box seams - for disposal (vs. my previous attempts at foot stomp crushing) I'm finding this Makita more difficult to maneuver than I expected - but it does work. Just in case I also purchased an extra OEM cutting blade = difficult to find.

Perfect for slaying the never ending invading hordes of cardboard....
With a little practice this thing zips through the horde of amazon boxes my wife and I manage to accumulate monthly. Many other uses, but this one is a big time saver (and saves space in the recycle bin). Its also a reliable and well known brand so i don't mind spending the premium over the XOQHUKwhatever brands that dominate this platform.

Good for light duty cardboard
I bought this tool to cut cardboard boxes into pieces for the recycling bin. After some practice, it works fine for regular cardboard shipping boxes. I found that kneeling on the box while cutting it works well. The blade seems sharp enough, but it does take a little bit of effort to push through the cardboard. It's nice that the guard protects the surface you're cutting on (and the blade). I plan on keeping the tool, but may look for better options in the future. The tool breaks when used on thick (1/4") shipping boxes. The blade will get pushed out of alignment, requiring partial disassembly to fix, as it will not cut very far when out of alignment. Thankfully only a couple screwdrivers are required to re-set the blade (take out the two right-most screws to pop off the plastic guard), but this tool is not recommended if you need to cut 1/4" boxes on a regular basis. The safety trigger is appreciated, but is a bit awkward to use at first. It is not an off/on toggle -- it requires a continual grip, which puts some unneeded stress on the thumb joint. This tool is not recommended if you need to cut a lot of boxes for your job, but it's fine for amateurs with minimal grip issues. The battery appears to last for a long time. The charging experience is average.
