How far apart should these be planted? I want to use these to border my yard.

I recommend planting 5-10 feet apart if you want canopies blending together.

someone help! how close to my 6 ft aluminum fence could i plant these? and will it be hard to raise the canopies so they clear the fence ?

I planted mine 5 ft from the fence. The large canopy on the tree doesn't get big until the tree is taller than 6 ft.

Are they deep rooted?

Not sure what you mean by "deep-rooted" so here goes: The plants are in little pot-like things when you get them. Depending on size, they have various root lengths. They do not grow "deep" roots when they are planted in the ground. They are not deep-rooted like maples nor shallow-rooted like dogwoods. Most crepes are grown to ten or fifteen feet high, with a reasonable root base occurring by that time. They do not blow over easily and are very hardy plants. Mine were tiny when I got them and I thought they had died over the winter, but dang if they aren't looking real pretty out there now, about two feet high in one year. They respond well to pruning, so don't be afraid to do that if they are not growing evenly.
