Demands to be viewed more than once.
I'm watching the MAKING OF features and it is amazing how fast the production team made this 3 hour + film in both New York and Budapest. I realize the characters are fictional but the Cast brings so much gravitas and vigor to their roles that you feel like you're watching the history of actual people who designed in this style of architecture. You might even want to watch the MAKING OF features first so you realize the immense efforts that went into this movie before actually watching the movie itself.

THE EMPEROR HAS NO CLOTHES
I'm wavering between one star and two stars. And I should have known better, having recoiled in horror at VOX LUX --- read some good reviews of it, but it was a real mess, virtually unwatchable. Well ... the emperor really has no clothes. I think the blame must reside squarely with Brady Corbet --- the gentleman simply cannot write or direct a decent film. THE BRUTALIST got really good reviews from most film critics, so I bit the bullet and bought a copy. Man, oh man. To quote a long-gone poet/singer: "The monk bought lunch; yeah, he bought a little!" This thing drags on and on, with some kind of plot that is buried deep in molasses. Perhaps I'm not the best critic of the film myself --- I flat-out gave up at the 100-minute mark. The characters are weird, don't make sense sometimes, and, maybe I did the right thing bailing out --- the best opinions seem to be that the film completely falls apart at the end. What a waste of great talents (Adrien Brody, Guy Pearce). To paraphrase, and alter the old joke about two elderly women having lunch at their assisted living home: "My gosh, dear, this meal is terrible. And the portions are so small!" THE BRUTALIST: "My gosh, Jethro, this film was terrible ... and so long, too!" I've discussed THE BRUTALIST with a number of friends who've seen it, and not one of them can put together a coherent argument to support its supposed "high quality" and Academy Award nominations. Of course, hardly a year goes by without some abomination getting nominated and managing to power through to win something...... .....

A disappointing use of VistaVision.
This film has garnered many accolades, including best actor and best cinematography Academy awards. I was absorbed by the story, and overall, the performances were commendable. However, I take issue with the claim that VistaVision was essential to tell the story properly. While it is true that the larger format offered by this technology can assist in providing increased image detail, as well as the ability to encompass a wider field of view of architectural or scenic elements without distortion from a wide angle lens, the number of scenes benefitting from these features was minimal. In fact, the claimed distortion found with wide angle lenses could have been minimized by careful camera placement. Alternatively, since this film used AI to provide authentic Hungarian accents, similar computer technology could have been applied to the digital intermediate (DI) to correct any such image issues. Special distortion correcting lenses also exist which could have been employed to address this problem. I was disappointed overall with the image quality of this VistaVision production, compared to the razor sharp images seen in the recent VistaVision restorations of “North by Northwest” and “Vertigo,” for example, as well as “The Searchers.” Scenes with darker illumination often lacked absolute black when needed, thus causing a lower contrast, grey cast to the image. This problem seems more pervasive these days, perhaps representing a change in aesthetic preference by modern cinematographers, or worse, by those technicians called “colorists” who manipulate the color palette and brightness/contrast levels, supposedly to “create a mood.”These may be minor quibbles on my part, but I only mention them because the VistaVision process is heavily promoted for this film, and in my opinion, it is far from the best example of what could be achieved with the process. The films I cited above provide a far more spectacular endorsement of VistaVision’s capabilities.
