My First Smart Phone. WOW!!
OK, I maybe a bit naive when it comes to the world of smart phones and a lot of people out there could most likely run circles around me when it comes to knowledge about such devices.. but I have to admit, this is one of the great purchases I've made in the last few years. It didn't take long for me to figure out that Android is a fantastic operating system. It doesn't limit or discriminate or alienate anyone or anything. It didn't take me long to track down 3rd party apps and figure out how to install them. Android is an easy but genius OS that lends itself openly to anyone who wants to use it. The phone, when compared to other Galaxy phones that cost much more does have it's limits. I was able to install an application that lets you play divx avi movies, but it's processor was a little two slow to play a movie full frame. Perhaps if I were to re-encode it to the size of the screen resolution, it would probably play just fine. so it has limits.. 600mhz processor is what I read. fair enough. I really don't plan on watching divx movies on my phone anyway. However, it can stream youtube videos without problem. perhaps there is a conversation process which facilitates this. I don't know for sure. Youtube works great, but avi films drop frames. For the price, it's really a great buy. I downloaded an app that will let me play any audio format. Flac, Wave, Mp3, etc. The sound quality is fantastic and I really like the fact that it will show you the album cover while you play your songs. A great feature thats most welcome is the fact that new media updates almost instantly. Ever own an mp3 player and you have 8 gigs of mp3 and you install a single new song or a new album and it has to update for 4 minutes before you can use it. This doesn't do that. The update is almost instant. That itself makes the phone worth every penny. It has bluetooth and you can get an app that will let you share your media files with your friends while they stand next to you. Here is that Frank Zappa album I was telling you about. Click.. send.. now your friend has the album on his/her phone. Genius. The screen quality is beautiful and it's a delight to use all these Star-Trek like features. The phone can even detect magnetic fields so I download and installed a compass. It's a bit of a novelty but it's totally cool and fun. I'm planning on doing some traveling and was able to download a free app for Europian train times that will give you detailed information on all train times throughout Europe. You don't have to go and switch on your laptop and connect to the internet and research a train from Amsterdam to Paris. It's just instant. Very handy. I like the fact that perhaps in the future, I will suddenly have a need for an app to do a particular thing.. like maybe convert currency.. and I know I can most likley find a free one or one on the google store for a couple of pounds. installation is super easy. just copy to your micro-sdhc card from your computer or install directly from the phones internet connection, wi-fi or 3G, makes no difference. It also has GPS. and not just an internet GoogleEarth 3G type of navigation (which you can still have if you want), but a real GPS receiver which will work even if you're out in the middle of no where with no cell phone signal.. My brother says he's uses his GPS when he goes golfing with a special golf app that tells him how far he is from the hole. He did say however that it really drains the battery quickly. I'd use it in a pinch in case I was lost or late for something important. It's lightweight, small and ergonomic. It's beautiful. don't forget that. So the phone for the price is a marvel and I highly recommend it.

Samsung Galaxy Mini
Bought this a couple of months ago as a Xmas present. Went for sim-free as a way of keeping the current PAYG tariff, which is no longer available. Has all the features wanted - quad band, 3G, wi-fi, USB connection, capacitive touchscreen, camera, music player, memory card slot (micro SD). It's also a sensible size to use as a phone (11x6x1.5cm), unlike some of the, almost tablet-sized, alternatives. Screen resolution is fairly low (240x320), but good enough for the screen size, except when surfing (some images appear pixelated). Samsung's Swype approach to texting is very good and is easy to learn. Most operations on the phone are very quick (helped no doubt by the lowish screen resolution), but it's unlikely to be fast enough for serious gamers. Phone calls are very clear and battery life is excellent. Camera resolution is low by today's standards (3.2mp), but easily enough for display on PC or standard size prints, and picture colours appear reasonably true to life. On the downside, there's no camera flash. Overall, whilst obviously not cutting edge, this phone is very good value for money as an entry level smart phone.

An excellent first phone but not amazing in today's market
The Samsung Galaxy mini is an great little phone for a child who have never owned a phone before. It is capable of many things such as buying and using apps and has decent texting. The only reason this does not get 5* is because the phone is quite poor based on today's market. It's camera is quite poor- mine goes all fuzzy when you move and, however picky, does not have a flash or a front facing camera- two things which I find quite essential. Not only the camera but it gets very slow after time and has no easy way of putting apps onto the sd card instead of on the phone (this is the bane of my life.)In conclusion- makes an excellent first phone but not for people who need more.Pro'sCheapReasonably functionalCons:Camera is shoddyGets very slowHard to handle memory
