Really fantastic kit, fossils are especially neat!
I bought this as a Christmas present for my nephews, and I cannot recommend it highly enough for any little geologists in your lives. They fossils are easily the best part, but the quality and diversity of other rocks in the kit is also amazing. I would recommend getting your own magnifying glass, as the one provided came a bit scratched up. It is a children's toy, but it was essentially useless. other than that, we had such a good time matching the rocks to the chart, studying the different rocks' marks, colour, and character, and even got a rock and crystal identification book out and learned more about their structures. It was such a cool way to do something educational and also really, genuinely enjoyable. My nephews are five, for reference, but my niece, who is four, also joined in and was perhaps the most enthusiastic of the bunch.

Excellent collection, lots of variety, impressive fossils
Bought as an activity for me with my 13, 10, and 8 year old nieces/nephew. Tons of variety, a lot of pretty ones, some polished and some not. (Note, there are two different sets offered in this listing—I bought the larger set, 250 pieces.) We enjoyed matching up all the rocks with the chart. I think we found all of them. They were wanting to take their favorite rocks home, but I like the set too much to break it up. In other words, it's MINE! :) I was obsessed with rocks and fossils as a kid and this kit would have been a dream come true. There's an accompanying booklet that we ended up using quite a bit, especially to learn about the fossils (which were still in the taped-up box in this video). I read them the page about "coprolite"—which yes, is found in this box too—and the youngest thought that was absolutely hilarious. I was surprised to read that one of the fossils in the box is something that has been extinct for millions of years, wow! We took the two geodes out to the driveway, put each one in an old sock, and hit them with a hammer. One cracked easily and looked like we hoped inside, hollow-ish and sparkly. The other took awhile to crack and was just solid hard crystal inside, which was less exciting. But it's always a gamble with geodes. The extra pound of "small tumbled stones" adds some extra interest and gives you something to "dig through" if you mix all the stones together. (The ones that we matched with the chart are generally larger in size and nicer looking than the small tumbled stones.) We didn't have time to do the crystal growing kit. Excellent value! I will look at this company for future gifts!

Excellent product for a kid’s first rock collection
I got this as a Christmas gift for our 4yo who recently developed a great interest in rocks and gems. It has been a big hit! The specimens are small but you get a lot of variety. We have had a great time looking at them under the microscope and sorting them by color. I would say this is a great product for the price, but I wouldn’t recommend it to an advanced collector.

Plain packaging, but plain old fun!
Don't be deterred by the plain packaging-this kit was fun, educational, and well worth the money we spent! This activity kit was purchased for my sons sixth birthday, and I have to say, it did not disappoint! It includes an identification sheet, 2 separately packaged geodes, instructions for opening them, and a ziplock bag of mixed gravel, which includes the specific rocks your child is meant to search for by digging through the "plain" gravel. Though the packaging is not "fancy," the price isn't a ball-buster, and the activity of sorting through gravel to find your rock specimens is actually very creative and educational. My son wouldn't have had nearly as much fun with a pre-labeled kit, and certainly wouldn't have learned what he did about rock and mineral identification. It is very hands on, but can be messy-a lot of dust is created in the shipping process. For my boys, that just makes it more fun (what boy doesn't like a little dust on his hands?). I don't usually mark items as a 5 star, but very improvement would be needed. Namely, I felt that we needed more assistance in specifying each rock in the kit-something along the lines of a short description sheet along with the identification sheet. Also, there are 4 pictures for amethyst. I understand the first two, the first of which is a polished amethyst stone, and the second a rough amethyst. However, the names under the titles are "Amethyst", "Amethyst (again),"Rough Amethyst (which looks so similar to the first option I'm not sure it warrants differentiating), and "Amethyst Cluster". After quite a bit of searching, I decided the "cluster" must have broken, because we didn't receive it. But there was so much amethyst in the kit that it didn't really matter-they got the general idea. I would like to see the "Rough Amethyst" and "Amethyst cluster" replaced two other minerals. Not sure what, but an easy one would be granite (included in a lot of box store gravel since broken granite is useless for any other purpose), and maybe feldspar? I am not an expert and am literally just throwing that out there, but I do feel the "amethyst" identification options are redundant. The only item we were not able to match up was the blue calcite. After multiple online searches, I deducted that the samples given are probably polished calcite, since there were a lot of those. But my son refused to match them up with the picture because "the picture doesn't look like that, mommy". None of these concerns change my review from a four star to a three star. My family had so much fun! And this kit is incredibly educational. They were so thrilled with it that they even pulled out their portable microscope to get a "closer look", which sparked a lot of wonderful questions.

Fantastic kit for kids who love science, collecting, or just discovering cool rocks.
This set is amazing! My son absolutely loves it — he was so excited to explore all the rocks, minerals, and geodes inside. It’s both fun and educational, giving kids a hands-on way to learn about geology while feeling like they’re on an adventure. The quality of the specimens is impressive, with a nice variety that keeps things interesting. Because my son enjoyed it so much, I’ve already bought more than one set, and each has been just as good as the last. Overall, this is a fantastic kit for kids who love science, collecting, or just discovering cool rocks. Highly recommended for sparking curiosity and keeping them engaged.

A box of dirt would have been more value.
