The New Dinosaurs: An Alternative Evolution

This book by Dougal Dixon asks, 'What would the Earth be like if dinosaurs had not kicked the bucket?' The first chapters deal with evolution in general and with real dinosaurs, where they came from, how they changed and why they might have died out. This is followed by chapters that deal with the different regions of Earth, how they have changed over the millions of years and what the animals are like. Not just dinosaurs either, but also creatures evolved from birds, pterosaurs, sea-reptiles and other animals. As in 'After Man' the whole book has been designed like a non-fiction text book, or a nature guide, but doesn't seem as detailed or as fun. While Dixon's 'The New Dinosaurs' seems slightly more realistic than 'After Man' which had such weird creatures as parashrews, it also seems to have less imagination.

This was purchased to complete a project of mine where I'm collecting old library books that I remember from childhood.

A childhood friend had this book at her house when I was growing up. I loved it then and have remembered it ever since, but I never took note of what it was called or who it was by, so every time it crossed my mind I would wonder to myself, "what was that book?" I finally couldn't stand it anymore and did a very extensive Google search on "fantasy dinosaur encyclopedia art book" until I finally was able to identify it. I promptly bought it. Still just as good as I remember, maybe even better now that I am actually old enough to read it all!

So I got this book as a child and loved it. But I lost it during the course of one of my moves and it's no longer in print. Super happy I found it here!

Such a wonderful book, lush illustrations and in-depth scientific descriptions and analysis of an Earth just like our own...but still populated by dinosaurs. It's a fantasy encyclopedia for the ages, part scientific hypothesis, part pure imagination.

A splendiessay on evolution with solid Natural History background. Delicious Reading.

Bought this hard-to-find book for my autistic teen son who is OBESSED with 'speculative evolution' - this book is both bonkers yet follows a certain logic...The illutrations and text are engrossing and inspiring, my son absolutely loves it.
