I have multiple nail issues and had used a plethora of expensive varnish type nail strengtheners. There are only two that really worked; Nailtiques Formula 2 and Manicurist SOS base coat. They are both good quality and effective, though they work in a different way. The primary difference is their key active ingredients: Nailtiques Formula 2 is a protein-based treatment that bonds nail layers with hydrolyzed keratin and gelatin, while Manicurist SOS Base is a vitamin- and AHA-enriched formula that works to moisturise and gently exfoliate the nail surface. Both are designed to address damaged and weak nails. The choice between the two depends on the specific nail concern. Nailtiques Formula 2 is best for nails that are fundamentally soft, peeling, or splitting, providing a strong protein structure to bond the nail layers. Manicurist SOS Base is ideal for brittle, very damaged nails that require intensive vitamin enrichment and hydration to recover from external stressors like harsh chemicals or frequent gel manicures. I found both products helped my nail health and appearance, producing fairly similar visual effects. As mentioned the SOS base coat is a varnish type of a strengthener and it can be used on its own or as a base coat under a nail polish. Used on its own, the product provides excellent protection for the nails. The SOS Base coat is colourless and, to me, it smells just like any other nail varnish. It is supposed to be applied twice weekly, however I apply it every other day. Once applied, it dries quickly, does not chip away and lasts for at least a week. Always apply one coat only; the first time you apply it do not do two coats, as it will take some time for the varnish to fully dry, and it could smudge. One coat per application is enough. Post application, the nails feel smooth and look nice and shiny. The appearance improves with additional applications which further cover up any visible imperfections such as nail ridges. After removing it, the nails feel stronger and look brighter and smoother. I really like it and cannot think of anything, even slightly, negative to point out with regards to this base coat. When it comes to results, the 2 subtle differences between the Nailtiques and Manicurist that I noticed, is that Manicurist SOS helped heal a stubborn, long term vertical split, whilst the Nailtique appears to have resulted in a slightly faster nail growth. Compared to Nailtiques, Manicurist SOS Base coat is significantly cheaper, and it lasts longer, since it is recommended for use only twice a week, whilst the Nailtiques Formula 2 is supposed to be used daily. With this in mind, in addition to what it actually does I'd say that Manicurist SOS Base nail strengthener is good value for money, and have no hesitation in recommending it.
