Starry Night: Van Gogh at the Asylum Review: Great! - The author’s ideas are completely solid. He knows his Van Gogh! He conveys his knowledge with directness and concussion. Not a word is wasted. The accompanying photos of Van Gogh’s art are presented very well. This is the second The book in this Van Gogh series. The first book is similarly awesome. Review: Intelligent, highly researched, great read - My husband & I read this and the other 2 in the series. We love VG's paintings, have a lot of books on him & his work. No art speak, simple but pertinent description of the paintings, there is no critical analysis. This is VG's life at the time, what paintings he did when and where and what he was thinking or writing at the time in these last crucial years. Bailey's research is thorough and he has uncovered an astonishing amount of new stuff from a field I would have thought was well mined...for ex. showing a photo of the registration of VG in St. Pauls asylum. Illustrations are plentiful and beautiful, highly enjoyable books. Very glad we read them.

Love it!
I’ve been enjoying reading this book. Very interesting with beautiful pictures of Van Gogh’s paintings. Also has photographs of the asylum and of the people that were linked to VG. The pages are beautiful too smooth photographic type paper. Highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Van Gogh.

Fascinating, Informative, and Beautiful
I enjoyed this book immensely. The author’s research and writing bring the reader into Van Gogh’s world and experience. You get to meet some of the people with whom he lived and worked. You see the beautiful color photos of Van Gogh’s art. This book is a wonderful introduction to people new to Van Gogh and an excellent addition to those who have long admired Van Gogh.

Interesting
The author does a good job of describing the year that Van Gogh spent at a mental hospital and there's a nice amount of art work in the book, but it's not as "great" as I'd expected from the description.

Place
There is lots about Van Gogh in this well-illustrated book, but it is mostly about the place, the Asylum. Vincent's comings and goings to and from the Asylum; his fellow-patients, the landscapes and other subjects of his painting around the Asylum, his rooms in the Asylum, his views from the Asylum, the nature of his treatment and how he was treated at the Asylum. As such, it is a marvelous addition to the copious Van Gogh literature. I found it to be engagingly personal and entertaining, and I think other VanGoghphiles will too.

Fascinating facts about Van Gogh’s psychiatric condition
Well written book about Van Gogh’s stay at the St. Paul asylum, full of detailed analysis of the course of his illness as well as paintings while living there. Anyone with an interest in the artist’s psychiatric condition and life at the asylum should read this book.
