Yes, it is supported. Somewhere on Intel's web site they say the i210 should be in production for several years yet.

Nope, it's not specific to HP desktops. Even though it says HP, it's an Intel card - just branded as HP. It should work in any desktop motherboard that has an available PCI Express slot. This card is PCI Express x1, which fits in x1, x4, or x16 slots. You don't say what OS you have in your custom desktop - if it's not Windows, make sure you can get the OS-specific driver for this card.
