One of the safest and most effective sunscreens I've found
This is one of the safest suncreens on the market in terms of ingredients and really does an excellent job. It's thick and slightly tricky to spread but the white cast is minimal if rubbed in well and it lasts for hours. Because of the elbow grease needed to put it on properly, I'd not recommend for a very young baby but on an adult or child it's fine. This is the best sunscreen for exceptionally sunny places, swimming and beach days. You might want something a bit lighter for every day use or sending to school / nursery. (Although this is currently the nursery suncreen I'm using)I took this to Italy recently for a beach holiday. It was over 30deg each day and we spent 5-6 hours on the beach and were in the water constantly. It's pretty hard to defend against sun that strong especially with constant swimming but my fair skinned 4 year old did not suffer any sunburn and came home almost the same colour as she left (after a month in the Italian sun!). I also used a thin layer on my face for extra protection after my usual Jan Marini physical face sunscreen and it neither felt greasy or left a strong white cast. It's difficult to create a 100% physical suncreen without a heavy white caste so this is a really exceptionally good product in my opinion. The only 'downsides' are the cost - it's cheap in the USA! - and the strong apple scent which will not appeal to everyone. I've tried almost every 100% mineral sunscreen on the market and this is a clear winner. Kiss My Face (facial suncreen) is also great but not so good for swimming or sweating on the beach. If you're concerned about the safety of chemical suncreens (and you should be!) then this is one of the best mineral ones you'll find.

Very dry and difficult to spread, which was making our baby's skin get irritated. I bought two bottles and unfortunately had to throw them away.

Excellent Product
My husband is all about reading reviews and doing the leg work before purchasing any item. So it was no surprise when he did the same for this particular product. A little about the product: Beautiful packaging and in a handy size. Once you squirt it on your hand it has a bit of a dense texture so I felt like I was actually putting something on my son (who's 8 1/2 BTW). Of course, he's a squirmer so I need to rub it in a bit, but I didn't really mind. It has a wonderful smell and as you apply it it goes on white, but immediately disappears. If you think you missed a spot you'll know you over applied once your child hits the water because those clear spots will turn white again. I've rubbed this across his eyes and it doesn't seem to sting and have also applied on his hands which of course immediately go into his mouth so he doesn't seem to mind the taste--no funny faces. He is currently taking swimming classes, we own a boat so he's on the water (usually in his floaty with a hat on), and I run daily in the AM so I apply on his legs and arms. I have noticed with overuse that is does protect him quite well. I made the mistake the other day of forgetting to apply sunscreen under his swim shirt and he had a bit of a tan, but you could tell that the sunscreen had done its work. I would definitely recommend this item. The cost does justify the rewards. One other thing, because of the dense texture a little does go a long way. Plus, you're putting it on a baby not a full grown adult. We also purchased two bottles-one for the house and the other is in our swim bag to reapply if needed. Granted I have yet to reapply since I don't keep him out a lot, but it does give me piece of mind to know I have it in case I need it again.

IMPORTANT DETAILS FOR MAKING A DECISION - PLEASE READ THIS REVIEW!!!
I recently re-purchased this item that has been a go-to in my daily routine, and also received a bottle like many others have seen with the liquidy almost watery consistency. It had barely any scent, and was not as effective in blocking the UVA/ UVB rays as I was used to.I ended up contacting Babo Botanicals directly asking if they had changed the formula. This was the response I received:"Yes we recently change the formula of our SPF 30 Clear Zinc Sunscreen Lotion. We enhanced it to be 80 minutes water/sweat resistant compare to the older formula. We have are using more clear zinc in compare to regular white zinc which cause the white clay consistency in our old formula. Rest assured that you still get the same amount of protection from the sun’s harmful UVA & UVB rays."After describing the water like consistency that I and other on Amazon had received, they responded with the following:"I will gladly inform our product development team to look into this. But I believe the reviews that you are seeing is for a bad batch that we had an issue with last summer where the product was separating and causing it to be water-like consistency, this was also for the Fragrance Free Sunscreen with a specific batch number. This has been resolved and we had launched a new formula this year. The new formula is not as thick as it once was. But it is now water resistant."Seeing as the bottle I received had an expiration date of 2 months from purchase date, I believe that we may have received some from the failed batch from last summer. You can tell if it's the new formula also by the Zinc Oxide content, which was reduced slightly to 19.4% in the new formula (mine still read 21%).Don't give up on this product just yet - it was indeed just a bad batch!

Good zinc oxide sunscreen
I've done a lot of research and testing when it comes to sunscreen. The research is done on the EWG website, and the testing is done by blowing a lot of money trying different products and never being happy with them. This is the first sunscreen that I'm happy with. It really does go on clear. Don't listen to any of these other reviews that say it doesn't. Yes, it comes out of the bottle white, and when you first put it on your skin it's white. Then, if you just rub for 5 seconds, it becomes clear. Most sunscreens take a minute of rubbing and it's still not clear. This takes 5 seconds and it's clear. It's like magic. I think the secret must be the grape juice, which is oddly enough the first ingredient. Something about grape juice makes zinc oxide rub in clear. Wonder who came up with that idea. You will NEVER find a zinc oxide sunscreen that goes on immediately clear like lotion. It will always take a bit of rubbing. That's just the nature of the ingredient. And it does, very very subtly, change the color of your skin. All zinc oxide sunscreens do that. It's hardly noticeable, but if you really look, you'll notice your complexion is slightly different. But it's really no big deal at all and no one else will notice. Some sunscreens turn you into a ghost. Not this one.It also smells good - like grape juice! The only con - your face will be a bit sticky. That's the disadvantage of the grape juice. The stickiness goes away after awhile. With sunscreens, you just have to try it out and see if it works for you, and I definitely suggest trying this one out.UPDATE: they changed the formula - no more grape juice. Now it's not as clear, but it's not as sticky either. It's basically a normal zinc oxide sunscreen now, nothing special.

An effective, cruelty free sunblock, EWG safe!
I bought this product because it had a very safe rating on EWG website, and I wanted a natural, cruelty free sunblock :) I wish I could've given 3.5 stars.Pros: love that this product is so natural and safe to use. I love that they don't test on animals, and I love how responsive and helpful their customer service was when I contacted with questions. This product, as well as most of their products are completely vegan and cruelty free! I used this sunblock on my face and neck daily until the tube was finished, and I never burned when I wore it. Once when kayacking in the Fl Keys, I burned my arms and hands so badly while rowing, but my face and neck stayed protected thanks to this sunblockCons: It did make my skin pretty light - definitely not "clear". It's non-nano zinc oxide, so I'm not sure how clear we can reasonably expect it to get - it is what it is. It was very thick, almost like caulk, which made application difficult (possible that I was sent an expired one?). I had to make sure my fingers were wet so that I could dilute the product enough to spread it over my face and neck with a thin enough application - Otherwise it was almost impossible for me to spread without applying so much I looked stark white. Since I wore this daily and not just to the beach, I really didn't want to look so white. This method did work effectively though, and I was able to use the whole tube up, definitely feeling very protected from the sun, which is the most important part. I may eventually purchase this product again, but for now I may try different EWG-safe brands to compare.

Babo Clear beats my prior favorite 'Coppertone Water Babies Pure and Simple' hands down.
Zinc oxide based lotions as you already know are the safest sunscreens to wear but also are known for their rather unpleasant looking WHITE look. I had previously been using Coppertone Water Babies pure and simple. It was not perfect but was the clearest zinc oxide product I could find. The Coppertone pure and simple lotion had a EWG http://www.ewg.org/2015sunscreen/ rating of 3 with 1 being the best. Finding a best rating of 1 seemed impossible for a lotion that went on clear. I was a total skeptic when buying the Babo clear zinc sunscreen since so many others had disappointed with regards to the white look. So yes I was very pleasantly surprised when using Babo, it's 98% clear with only a very light but not noticeable white tint or haze. It is more clear than the Coppertone which was my past favorite. It's consistency is a bit more solid than the Coppertone which is a good thing since the Coppertone was a bit too runny for me personally. That said the Babo should be rubbed in quickly (to achieve the clear look) since it dries pretty fast. The Babo washes off more easy than the Coppertone which I like since I prefer to wash off sunscreen once indoors. Because of this I would not be too confident of wearing Babo in the ocean or like. Lastly Babo clear is NOT a nano lotion, nano zinc lotions are good at achieving a clear look but their ultra small particles could possibly be absorbed into the blood stream. So in conclusion FINALLY I've found a safe zinc oxide sunscreen (EWF 1 rating) that goes on easily and achieves the clear look !
