Gents LINCOLN High Top Hat - 100% Wool - Satin Lined - Removable Feather

I`m putting together a "sinister ringmaster" costume for a Halloween event and very quickly realised that all that sort of costume came with a cheap and terrible hat that likely wouldn't even fit. This hat is a much higher quality, wearable, wool hat and came in a good range of sizes. Its rather lovely and will likely age well - well worth it if you want to take some pride in a costume, say for a stage performance of similar.

Although I ordered the extra large size ie 60-61cm, the actual measurement was 62cm. This is not a problem for me as I have shrunk it smaller using steam and heat and intend relining it with a more 'period correct' glazed black cotton fabric and putting in a leather internal hat band to replace the leather-look plastic. The brim has also been re-shaped to a flat style rather than the curved brim as bought as I am re-modelling the hat as suitable for the Metropolitan police, along with a black leather top cover and leather strips on the sides of the crown reinforced with quarter round bamboo. I am very pleased with the hat as bought - the quality is excellent. A great starting point for re-modelling as the height is correct at 8 inches for the Met in 1851.

As most of the reviews have stated, hat sizing is difficult to get right and despite ordering what appeared to be the correct size based on head circumference it was in fact a little to large. However, this is often to be expected if you're not going to a shop to be measured up by a professional and then buying a hat chosen specifically to meet your needs. A £5 set of hat resizing inserts has solved everything.The quality of the hat itself is pretty good for the price. Mine arrived with some wear on the underside which seemed odd considering it was plastic wrapped so for that reason I've given it a 4 star

I thought that the Top Hat might be a bit "Cheap and nasty"- as it is really very reasonably priced. However- it is good quality; well packaged and everyone thinks it must have cost at least £50 or £60.
