Intersectional feminism at its best. It made me aware of my own shortcomings when teaching feminist theory.Understanding feminism as a political commitment rather than an identity treat is utterly important, and this book makes clear why. Reading on her current blog I can see that she maintains most of the statements that she first made in this book, which I have found really helpful in my classroom, research, and approach to a possible change.bell hooks essays changed my life 4 years ago and I will be forever grateful. As she often says: "Patriarchy knows no gender," and these essays are a must for every human being.

you can do better by such an important book
The book is remarkable, powerful, totally original, the source of how to think about intersectionality. The Kindle edition is flawed by low quality optical character recognition from the original text. Whenever it appears in italics, for exam-le, the word “liberal” turns into “uberall.” Lillian Hellman is Lillian Heilman throughout. And so forth. Amazon, you can do better by such an important book.

Brilliant
bell hooks is such an amazing writer. She writes in a way that is understandable without being pretentious and her message is straightforward.

Still relevant
The references are dated but, in 2019, hooks’ theory is as relevant as ever. A must read for today and for the future

This was great for my feminist theory class. I loved the context of this through Bell's eyes.

My book only had every other page! Unfortunately, I didn't realize it until the return window closed. I can't believe it. This is too expensive of a book for this to be an issue!

This review has nothing to do with the content of hooks' book, which I love, but the copy I received from SuperBookDeals--- only printed every second page, making it useless. Watch out! I am returning it.

My impression is that bell hooks is a pretty controversial figure within feminism
My impression is that bell hooks is a pretty controversial figure within feminism. If this is true (and my impression may be mistaken, or outdated), then I'm surprised. Her main thrust seems to be inclusiveness. She criticizes several approaches to feminism as failing the very people it should seek to help: the poorest and weakest members of society (rather than the relatively well off "bourgeois" women). She also surprised me with how much of her thought could potentially appeal to conservatives. She criticizes "separatist" elements of feminism, which would have women form separate societies and institutions apart from men, and notes ways the patriarchy harms men as well. She also emphasizes the importance of family. Her critique of capitalism is, of course, disappointing and annoying, ultimately detracting from what could be a more coherent vision of human flourishing.
