Great movies

Enough has been said about these films elsewhere, so I will will stick to describing this release specifically. This is a 4 disc set containing the Warner Archives Blu-ray releases of The Big Sleep, To Have and Have Not, Key Largo, and Dark Passage. Unlike for example Warner's "Film Favorites" collections, they are not double-stacked and each disc is given its own tray. This set offers a significant discount (even at MSRP) with no significant downside over the individual releases (unless you really want the individual case art, I guess). Great value for the money.

This is a great set and I would definitely recommend it for the 4 films included. One thing I wanted to mention that is not anywhere to be found in the product information or even on the box when you get it is the 1945 pre-release version of The Big Sleep. This was the earlier version that was found and released to theaters in the late 90s. Because I was a kid then that was my first experience of the movie and so, for better or worse, that’s “my” version. That version of the film is included in the special features on the disc for The Big Sleep, but sadly it has not been remastered like the 1946 theatrical cut (the main version on the disc) has. The 1946 cut is beautiful, crisp, and clear, while the 1945 cut still has all the “old movie” flickers and cigarette burns. I don’t see any difference from the quality of the DVD. That said, I don’t think you’ll do better anywhere else, and this set really is worth the price. 4 classic films beautifully remastered is worth your time. And each film has its own disc with its own special features, so it’s a good presentation on the whole.

Warner Archive released this collection of all 4-films that Humphry Bogart and his wife/co-star Lauren Bacall starred in together, looking fine in HD, porting over all previous extras, though nothing new was added. Still, they had been released on Blu-ray individually, but here make for a more affordable, compact bargain. The films are: "To Have and Have Not" (1944) "The Big Sleep" (1946) "Dark Passage" (1947) "Key Largo" (1948)
