All Shall Be Well: A Modern-Language Version of the Revelation of Julian Norwich (Anamchara's Spiritual Classics for Modern Mystics)

I read this because I learned that C.S. Lewis highly regarded this book (no surprise, his specialty was medieval literature). First of all, this is a paraphrase, setting the language in contemporary English, which will please many but not all readers. And this is an annotated version, with at times extensive commentary and explanation of the choice of words used, all very helpful. A few observations: These are the mystical contemplative reflections of a sheltered anchorite This is both a devotional and theological book, and the chapters are so short it could be read as a daily devotional, which is how I read it. Secondly, Julian appears very cautious of violating official church doctrine, in a time when the Catholic church wasn't very tolerant of teachings that strayed from its view. As a precaution, this was not published till long after Julian's death, and she was granted sainthood by Rome. She at times offers some unique perspectives, such as the motherhood of God and her confident belief that every person will be reconciled to God. She nearly never cites Scripture, which I found odd for a book filled with theological reflections. Did she rely solely on her visions? Was a Bible available to her? Overall I felt this book well worth reading. I especially appreciated her thoughts on our union with Christ, and the consistently positive tone.

What impresses me most about this modern translation of Julian of Norwich is the thoughtful and sensitive introductions to each brief chapter. Ellyn Sanna is clearly aware that some of the choices made in paraphrasing the old (often archaic) wording to contemporary English might be unsettling or challenging to more religiously conservative readers (like myself). Substituting, for example, the word "Savior" with "Rescuer" might appear unnecessarily provocative and novel were it not for the caring and thorough explanations preceding each of the 86 chapters. Once I knew why these word choices had been made, I could accept and respect the reasoning, and indeed let it open my mind to a fuller understanding. Most importantly, Julian's message of hope shines through on each page. It is a message our troubled world needs to hear. Well done!

I loved it! But I wanted to know about this women! I think you will love it if you want to know about her! I feel that I needed to know what she had to say because before I read this book, I had known about her message , "all shall be well" I needed her message and still do! Wanted to hear more. This women lived in the thirteen hundred years! She left us an amazing message! I get it!

A classic that inspired CS Lewis can inspire Americans. Translator Ellyn Sanna explains her choices of words, based on a scholarly knowledge of the English that Julian heard and spoke in the 14th century. Our Lord becomes our Protector. Our Savior is our Rescuer. For millennia, Christians have sung about God as "lover of mankind" and yet it still amazes us when Julian tells us that God is our Father, Mother, and lover.This unknown woman was the Marianne Williamson of the Black Plague years in England. She brings us back to love.

ALL WILL BE WELL, the writings and visions of the medieval mystic Julian of Norwich, is a wonderful meditation on Love and the God who us Love. Over this last year I read from it daily, as a companion to the Bible and Diary of Dorothy Day. It was a great meditation and comfort every single day.

I'm reading it right now. It's only for the mystical-hearted ones though. Don't bother if you just want to find fault and call it lunacy. Spare us and yourself! This young woman truly encountered the Living Christ in her "visions" and has given us the resulting wisdom from these "gifts" of grace! Thank you to the publisher and editor for putting this out there!

I have read four different translations of Lady Julian's work over the last twenty years. The language in even the most recent of those translations is rather archaic and hard to understand; the Penguin Classics is probably the easiest. I had high hopes for this book since it dramatically simplifies the language. Unfortunately it is also marked by intrusions into the text of ideas that are the product of the translator and not the author. This is a dangerous and disrespectful way to treat this text. Much as I wanted to like this book, I could not in good conscience recommend it to anybody because of this.

I absolutely loved this translation of Mother Julian's Revelations! The description characterizes it as a paraphrase, but I think that is overstating the case. The translators made some deliberate choices in their translation to make it clearer to modern audiences and always explained those choices at the beginning of each chapter. These choices make Julian accessible to a new generation.
