Redwood BB-HL200 10-inch Hurricane Lantern

DO NOT buy this lantern, it is a potential death trap, it arrived well packaged but upon opening it, first the paper instructions were inside the unremovable glass dome, the only way I could remove them was to set fire to them and then shake out the ashes, the lantern is made of the poorest aluminium that I have ever come across the leaver to raise the dome bent completely out of shape on the first use, the filler cap only came off after a struggle and left the filling hole bent and twisted and I was unable to get the cap back on securely, after filling the lantern (I was careful to only 1/4 fill the tank) it leaked from the bottom seals luckily I was out on my patio because when I put a match to the wick the lantern went up in a sheet of flames, I can only imagine what would have happened if I had lit it indoors!!!! So please don't put your safety at risk and do not purchase this item

I knew I was taking a gamble on such a cheap lantern but I at least expected it to work once.. Nope. Once saturated, the wick is too thick for the hole and it binds when you try to lower or raise it. The adjustment wheel turns a little cog inside that ends up spinning freely and fraying the wick without actually moving it. Ended up with flames licking out the top and smoke belching everywhere and couldn't lower it or raise it. I took the thing apart as much as I could and the only way I could get the wick in or out was to twist it as I pushed, which completely frayed the ends. You could probably drill out the hole to a larger diameter but you've probably got better things to do. The filler cap is another issue. It doesn't unscrew all the way and binds on the lip. I had to pull it off which bent the ~1mm thick metal. I don't know if it will properly seal now but it doesn't really matter because I won't be using it again. Just buy a decent one.

I recently purchased one of these lamps and was chuffed at the price, however, be warned you may not get value for money with this for the following reasons;1) You have a choice of colours as shown in the picture, however, if colour isn't important to you do not specify when ordering and you will recieve one of the above colours by default (this is how the ordering info is instructed) ........ WRONG! you will receive an unpainted, unprepared lamp in the "tinned" state (a similar shiny finish to the old metal pencil cases you could buy) this offers little to no protection against moist air let alone leaving it in the rain by mistake. Nevermind I said, for the sake of a £5 lantern I will paint it myself to the colour the good lady would like ...... I proceeded to do this and everything was fine ............. or was it.2) This lantern can't fulfil part of its role, by that I mean, it leaks. The soldering (or lack of) means that any fuel you put in weeps out through the joints of the lamp (visual inspection of the lamp does not show this fault). Considering I had already painted the lamp I now have ruined paintwork and a leaky lamp that leaves puddles of parafin everywhere.This is a shame as the lamp is quite a pretty thing to look at and sheds enough comforting light to see by whilst stargazing in the garden with a beer on a summer evening. My failing is that I painted the lamp prior to checking for leaks so this is my mistake and I have to accept it. So for other potential buyers, please don't make the same mistakes I did. If it arrives unpainted - Send it back, then, make sure it doesn't leak, if it does - Send it back again.UPDATE 13/08/12Further to this I voiced my complaints to the seller and they very courtiously sent out a replacement free of charge complete with an apology for the inconvenience. The customer service is very good and because of that I added another star.

IT LOOKS WELL MADE UNTIL YOU COME TO USE IT. JUST RAISING THE GLASS THE STRUCTURE BUCKLED OUT OF SHAPE. METAL IS TOO THIN. I HAVE SAVED GLASS AND PUT REST IN THE RECYCLING BIN.

Bought for the garden - give off nice light and a bit of heat. Look good for the price

This product is poorly made and tends to leak around the uprights. The makers are aware of this and have placed a label on the side advising users not to fill over a certain level which is not always easy.
