Engaging, well written books that 'did it' for my 11 year old
These stories have a style that seems just right for children of around 10 - 12. The story telling is straightforward and the narratives include a lot of period detail that is likely to catch the imagination. One story, for example, works in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. The central characters (so far as we have read) are two girls, two boys and a dog. Mmmm - I wonder where that format came from? It has only occurred to me as I write, but - now that I have thought of it - there is a definite Famous Five wholesomeness about the stories, although the language, the plots, and the settings are for older children. The cultural assumptions are also much more up to date.I can imagine that these stories would be equally interesting for boys and girls. I have an 11 year old boy who struggles with dyslexia. I chose these books to read with him, and suddenly - to my surprise - he began taking them off to read on his own for long periods at a time, which is something that he hasn't done before.I bought the first book from a knowledgeable bookshop that stocked them - and I'm very grateful that such shops still exist. It's great knowing that because there are so many books in the series (and as long as he doesn't tire of them)we have several months of reading sorted out for my son.

Highly recommended
Fabulous books. My daughter devoured these between the ages of 7-9, but they'd be a good choice for boys or girls until at least the end of primary school.

A series unafraid of showing the Roman Empire - warts and all
My grandmother brought be the first 3 books of this series when I was 7, and I can credit this series completely for instilling in me lifelong passions for reading, classical history and detective fiction. I'm 21 now, just finished my degree in archaeology and since my original copies are falling apart I've decided to buy a new set and rebind them to look better on a bookshelf. Perhaps what I enoyed most about this series when I started reading it was that it never seemed dumbed down, unlike other childrens books which can seem a bit patronising at times, the series isn't afraid to show the less savoury elements of the Roman Empire - death, slavery and torture for example. If you're considering buying this series for yourself or for your children I cannot recommend it enough.

The Roman Mysteries
So far i have read 13 Roman Mysteries books they are all BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!!!They are all about 4 children one beggar, a ex-slave girl ,a Jewish boy and a daughter of a sea captain, who all meet in the first book and solve mysteries. The books are set in a wide range of situations from ampitheatres, to volcano eruptions, charioteer races and murder.
