Such a great story.
I have always loved this book and enjoyed watching the movies made from it. After the death of her parents, a young orphan girl winds up being sent from India to Thwistlewait Manor in the Moors. There all kinds of mysterious things occur, including finding out about a mysterious hidden garden somewhere on the estate. The friends she makes and their adventure in finding and fixing up the secret garden are a wonderful story. At the beginning of the story Mary Lennox is an extremely spoiled, bratty little thing, but throughout the story you can see the changes slowly beginning to take shape. She and her cousin, Colin, are quite a pair together, especially in the beginning of their relationship. Dicken is a great character with his love of animals, both domestic and wild. This is a great read for anyone from a child to an adult. You should really enjoy the book.

Not perfect, but still deserves its reputation as a children's classic
Despite being a voracious reader, there are some books considered "children's classics" that I have never read. I decided to rectify this recently by picking up "The Secret Garden." I was somewhat familiar with the story, as I'd watched a film adaptation of the story at one point, but am fully aware that books and their movies can often be vastly different. So though I could predict certain things about the story as I read, I still found it an enjoyable read... even if it isn't my favorite book, and certain elements felt strange in their inclusion, especially towards the end."The Secret Garden" follows Mary, a spoiled and unlikable young girl and the daughter of a British officer living in India. When her parents die of a terrible sickness, she's shuttled off to England to live with a reclusive uncle, and finds herself lost and alone in the gloomy manor. But as she sets out to explore her new home and make sense of this strange new land, she discovers the titular secret garden -- a garden that has been locked up since her aunt died in a tragic accident ten years ago. Enchanted by the garden, Mary sets out to tend it and bring it back to life, aided by a grouchy gardener, a soft-hearted animal-loving boy named Dickon... and Colin, a cousin who has been locked inside all his life and treated like an invalid. The garden turns out to be just the thing both Mary and Colin need to revitalize themselves... and it just may finally bring healing to a family long broken by tragedy..."The Secret Garden" is an enchanting novel, told with an almost fairy-tale-like language that evokes the sights, sounds, and smells of the English moors and gardens and their inhabitants. The writing style is lovely, and paints clear pictures in the mind. The heavy Yorkshire accents of certain characters can be tricky at times, but I managed anyhow. And while Dickon as a character feels a little too good to be true, almost straying into Mary-Sue territory, it's nice to see Mary and Colin develop as the book goes in, gaining confidence in themselves and shedding some of the selfishness and bad temper their sheltered lives have given them. The biggest flaw, in my opinion, is that the book strays into a weird fantasy/magical-realism realm toward the end, which I feel wasn't foreshadowed very well. I love fantasy and don't mind magical realism, but it felt out of place here, especially with Colin going on about studying "magic" while at the same time declaring he wants to be a scientist. It just felt odd to me, and while it might be a product of its time (this book IS over a century old), it did taint my enjoyment somewhat.Still, complaints aside, I can easily see why "The Secret Garden" enjoys a reputation as a children's classic. It's not the best children's novel I've ever read, but I enjoyed it, and am glad I gave it a chance. Perhaps I'll pick up the author's other classic, "A Little Princess," sometime in the near future...

A Classic Indeed
I've been reading this book off and on for eighty years and think that it still has something in it for children to read. It tells them - at least - how things used to be, and the story itself is a page-turning one. I just hope it lasts.

The best book I've read in a long time.
I loved this book! It grabbed me and took me into the lives of two children with different sorts of disadvantages. But hope and love and a strong spirit saw them through (together, but with help from others too) to complete health. They shocked those around them who had them pegged for ill, dying and unwanted ... but ... saw the immense change that comes with love, HOPE and what they called "magic." The story was woven with skill and was AWESOME. I totally recommend this book.

WONDERFUL, TOUCHING, ENDEARING, AND BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN BOOK
This is a true classic. Love this book. Read it as a youth, and it hasn't lost any of it's charm or appeal. We read it in Book Club and everyone loved it and was touched by it. There were some who'd never read it and they loved it as much as those of us who had read it. What a poignant story of a lonely little girl and a lonely little boy, brought together by a beautiful garden and their friendship with a nature-loving, kind and sincere other child. Just beautiful.

Secret Garden
I began to read The Secret Garden as a summer read. This read was quite enjoyable and I found myself as an secrete participant in everything that took place. Very delightful. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to take a sabbatical from everyday drama. This is a 'book of hope' primer for those who believe in changing their negative confessions.

Magic
One hundred years (plus) later and this book holds up extremely well. I have never read it before and I'm so glad I put it on my list to read this year.I love gardening and the joy and magic that is discussed about being outdoors and communing with nature resonated with me.It is a simple adventure but holds a greater and wider meaning on how to live a happy life. I would definitely recommend reading, especially in spring when one can watch the Earth bloom along side the secret garden.

It's not a secret if everyone talks about it...
Downside of eBooks....not only is the garden no longer secret due to wide publication, but several YouTube conspiracy theorists are now using it as proof that climate change is a lie, and several Kardashians are mining it for actual talent and grace.Cool story though.

A new favourite
Why did I always avoid this book and film growing up!? This was such a beautiful and heart-warming story. We follow two children who have been neglected and raised through privilege - always getting their way despite being horrible and bratty, and not doing anything to help themselves. We watch them blossom as they tend a garden that had been locked away for a decade after the mistress of the house tragically died. Watching them enjoy nature and just be children has me longing for my childhood days of running around outside, and trying to tend my own garden - I loved watching Gardeners World and then running outside to try and make something beautiful. I was very bad at it, and still am to this day, but I loved it so very much. This is definitely a book I will reread time and time again.

A delightful read
I first read this book many years ago and loved it. After watching the recent film version I wanted to refresh my memory. The book is much better than the film in my opinion. I won't spoil it for those who haven't read it but there is so much more detail in the book, about the interaction between characters and also about the garden. It's an uplifting book with some lovely observations. I read it on kindle but wish I'd bought the book so I can share with others. I still might.

The Secret Garden
The Secret Garden is an old classic. It is a great and interesting book but some of it can be a bit tricky to read especially when people with a Yorkshire accent such as Martha are speaking. I was interested in this book at first when I saw it was free on my kindle! The name also rang a bell in my head.I recommend this book to anyone 9+ or just get an adult to read it to you! There is also a movie you can get of this book which I have watched thoroughly and loved. My favourite character is by far Martha because she is jolly and always has something to say! I was always fond of Mary and Colin too even know they are very stubborn. I also liked the way Dickon looks after animals, wildlife and his family. Overall a very good book!

A vintage children's classic
A vintage children's classic - almost unbelievable in our modern age, but an interesting read for anyone fascinated by the changing attitudes in society. I enjoyed it first over 70 years ago, and am glad to add it to my list of still enjoyable children's books for my grandchildren

Very good
This is a very good little book, it's one of those you here about but ignore, great for children and you can get it free from Amazon this month. There is also an audio version with it so you can listen as well, worth a read/listen would certainly recommend for children.
