2nd Read of these novels
Loving reading these books even more the 2nd time. The detail is extraordinary, if over the top in its extravagance. The humor is sometimes subtle, sometimes laugh out loud, esp in the footnotes. Not a sentence is gratuitous, not a description is unnecessary or irrelevant. Each character has a story that is compelling, whose character is given a chance to develop and grow, that beckons the reader to finish the dinner dishes and get back to reading.

That ending though!
It was a little slow to get started. I'm really happy how all the characters ended up, and Kitty Pong whole story was hilarious and unpredictable and my favorite. It was also a good resolution for astrid. I'm curious to see where else these characters can go, as it seems they are all so well resolved.

I really enjoyed the first book
I really enjoyed the first book, and was eagerly awaiting this new book. I am happy to say that I really enjoyed the second book as well, and it was satisfying on all levels.Yes, this new book is very similar to the first book - the shocking luxuries and privileges of the ultra rich forming the background of a gossipy soap opera. But we have new characters who come from a very different place to change things up a little. The China ultra rich are a completely different breed than the old rich of the overseas Chinese. They are more ostentatious, yet more practical. Why stop at a tiny private jet when you can have a 747 with a koi pond? Yes, it's fine to pay millions for a clock, but instant ramen in the hotel room is superior to expensive Chinese food in the hotel restaurant. Having heard of the red princes and princesses who blend into the American college campuses, one can only imagine what their secret lives are actually like.Rachel and Nicholas were boring vanilla characters in the first book, a perfect blank canvas to showcase the colorful personalities of the other characters. Nicholas has stayed vanilla in this book, but Rachel seems to have matured and gotten a little more personality. I was most invested in Astrid's story in the first book, and I was pleased to see that she gets plenty of book time and a conclusion to her story.I thought Collete, one of the new characters was really cool initially, although Kevin Kwan later shows us who she really is. Kitty Pong's ascent to a major character painted her in a surprisingly different light.I was initially taken aback by the idea of Eddie Cheng having to work for a living. Seeing him at work is very different from seeing him fuss over his kids' clothes. He's become a different person to me. There is also Corrina Ko Tung, also part of the ultra rich by birth, but works for the even richer.I feel like this second book may hold slightly wider appeal since Kwan is not discussing esoteric families in Singapore, but describing a whole new lifestyle that people are curious about - the new Chinese ultra rich. There is even slight social commentary about the ranks within the ultra rich, and the types of people who populate it.I was looking forward to this book and I'm not disappointed. But with the Astrid story wrapped up, I'm not sure if I'm that excited about finding out about Nicholas' inheritance problems in book three if it comes out.

Another abrupt ending...
Like its predecessor, thus book is well-written, entertaining, and a reasonably quick read. There are still too many characters, & if possible, they & their surroundings, as well as their interactions, are even more over the top than last time. It's kinda cute the first few times you read about the extravagance associated with the billions involved, but soon I found myself wondering how many times one author could force descriptive exposition into one book. The answer is "a lot". The saving grace where that is concerned is that he uses different writing devices this time than last, & the end-notes are cheekier, so you get the payoff in different ways. Nevertheless, the book follows a number of sub-stories which culminate into one supposedly dramatic turn at the end, but it's over so quickly I had no chance to get invested in any of it. He's also not brave enough to give any of the characters any real consequences, so there's never any real dramatic tension. I might give 3.5 stars if I could, but unfortunately this book doesn't pull enough weight to get the 4th as I gave that to the previous one.

Presente
Comprei como um presente para minha mãe depois que ela se apaixonou pelo filme. O livro tem um tamanho bom, a qualidade é excelente e não é um livro pesado. Para os amantes de Comédias Românticas é uma trilogia a se pensar em ler.
