    Not close to Suede's best

I can't tell if I'm being stingy or too generous with three stars. This book was a mostly-entertaining mess. The Good:- Reuben is the kind of lead character you'd expect from Suede: relatable and flawed. He was a character I was happy to spend a book with.- Most everything except the main plot. On a chapter-by-chapter basis, the book is an enjoyable read. The Not-So-Good- Andy never felt real to me, or even clearly-defined enough to actually like. Given that he's the book's romantic interest, that's a huge problem. In related news:- Surprisingly, given that this is from the author of "Hot Head" and "Bad Idea," the romance didn't click. I didn't get that there was enough of a personal connection between the characters for anything approximating love to happen, which makes the instances of the L-word super-awkward.- The bodyguard/suspense elements of the plot came across as muddy and unfinished. Much of the book is set in a building that we learn, at the beginning of the book, is highly-secure. Later events in the book totally ignore the givens of its first chapters. The human elements that surrounded that section of the plot never made a lick of sense.- The problematic power dynamics of the boss/employee relationship get hand-waved at the end of the book. The book almost sorta goes near talking about it, then chickens out. The same applies to the 1%er white/working-class Latinx elements of this pairing. To be clear, I enjoyed most of this book. It's the thriller-lite elements of the book that left me with narrative blueballs. I find myself wondering if, despite the 2015 publication date, if this was written before Suede's other, more assured books. It might be worth picking up if you already like the author's work, but if you do, manage your expectations.

    Rounded up to three

I am really struggling to find words to explain my disappointment in this novel.Dameon's stories are all very different so comparing one with another is like apples and oranges and pears, yet the writing, execution, observations are always top notch. This, it was a brick. Really clunky, half of the dialogue between the two MC I had no idea who was talking and which he, him, his was being referred to as sometimes I felt as if a point of view had changed mid sentence. Hmm, even after backtracking a conversation flow I was still clueless....ok, move on, forget that chat. The why's and wherefore's of the plot eluded me. The wallet scene, what was the purpose, considering the next interaction with Walrus stache .......well that escalated quickly! And the whole way out for Andy, I can't even. I felt like I was reading this through smeared glasses, like if I could just clean them enough then I would see clearly. Apparently not. Or maybe I am just not clever, or the whole scenario was not actually fleshed out enough for a non-investment banker to make even a modicum of sense out of it.Told third person from only Reuben's point of view, we are in his slightly negative mindset the whole time. I didn't mind Reuben, and could understand him and his outlook for the most part. Andy was another matter and did not warm to him as he was smoke and mirrors. Not a recommended read for me, but others obviously enjoyed it,

    Badly written

I have read a few of his other books that were easy, fun, and erotic. They had little problems, but overall they were enjoyable quick reads. This, however, was a HORRIBLE waste of time and money. I bought it because the idea sounded great, but I read about 60% of it painfully then I just skimmed the rest swiftly because I couldn't bring myself to read anymore. It reads like a first rough draft! The dialogue was hard to follow leading you to backtrack to figure out which character was talking, entire sentences didn't make much sense sometimes, and the whole thing was so repetitive that you realize that the book could have been a short story if they had actually edited it. The choices for dialect and speech patterns were bizarre, and these seemingly two very different people used the same ones? Page after page, paragraph after paragraph, the same self-hating themes too. If not that then the 'I'm a full time drunk and need AA' theme. Not that I'm against the use of either theme, but it was every sentence! There was nothing else to the book almost! There was nothing else to the main character. Even the erotic elements were pretty bad. Outside of that the characters had such unclear motivations, and the plot was so ridiculous and vague, I just was so disappointed. (I mean who goes to all these parties as a guest, never talks to a soul, and no one sees that as suspicious?) Disappointed both in the author whom I had liked, and myself for wasting the money. I could go on about the problematic representations or ridiculous sex, but there is no point.
