This is an alternative to having to pull the battery cable off the battery post if you have a parasitic drain on the electrical which you cannot fix. It may also have an anti-theft application although anyone who can figure out how to hotwire a car can probably get around this. In my case, the diagnostics do not reveal the battery drain and having replaced two batteries I have decided to just live with the need to disconnect overnight. Simply screw tight to engage battery use and loosen to disengage. If you install it on the positive terminal, you will have exposed metal that can accidentally be shorted.
