Meaning can I use batteries or do I have to plug in?** A: Completely portable. It is self contained with rechargeable batteries. I use it in my noisy work truck with my smartphone. It really rocks. I immediately bought one for my wife. **Q: any one had problems? bad smell when opened, static hiss sound, clicking noise when connecting to Bluetooth,** A: I have two of these speakers and never had any issues with them. A soft chime plays when connecting to Bluetooth. I listen to my audio books and music with no distortion or static hiss on these speakers. Did not immediately recognize my Mac nor my iPhone and sometimes, still doesn't [unlike ueboom]. don't forget to disconnect when you're done, otherwise it'll keep beeping until you shut it off. also, unit doesn't stay on. you've gotta flip the on/off switch on and off to reactivate the unit [again, unlike the ueboom; which by the way has the most irritating connection/disconnection sound you've ever heard]. unit's not particularly loud - volume maxes out sometimes leaving you wanting.NOTE: After a year and more at home using this thing, connectivity is a never healing irritant, but I no longer care - the sound is superior to the same size Bose and UEBoom speakers - largely because this things delivers in stereo - with all the streamed classical stuff I tapped into, the difference is night and day. oddly enough, for playbacks when contributing to a choral or instrumental compilation, the mono speakers work better, but for concerts and such, wow, great great sound. I have hardwood floors throughout the house and I put it on the floor set about 8" to a foot from the wall - under furniture is fine too. vivid, lively - timpani, plenty of bass - amazing. hope it lasts forever. ### ⭐ Terrible sound. *by S***S on February 15, 2016* I really wanted this to be a good purchase, but it sounded awful. Lower frequency sounds came out buzzy, and there was a range of frequencies around 2000Hz that were just absent. Truly terrible. Bluetooth, Aux In, on battery, plugged in, it didn't matter. Also, it was difficult to pair initially, but finally it did and I didn't have any further pairing problems after that. I returned it and didn't want to bother taking another chance on it. Too bad, really, as it looked nice and had a good heft to it. The buttons sounded and felt cheap, but for $30, I would have easily overlooked that as long as it sounded ok.
