For our next child I will do the same thing from a much younger age, because I think it establishes a nice patterned light to fall asleep to. I generally try to give it some distance from the baby, but you can hand wash it by basically spot cleaning the whole thing. It stayed lit up for the entire 45 minutes as said it would and, shut off automatically so I never had to worry about the batteries running down. And no - we don't let her "play" with it - it's not intended to be a toy and she knows it is her nightlight.
