If you look on the side of your chain it usually is printed / engraved into the side of the chain link, what pitch your chain is. Also , you can buy different pitch chains for the same saw so it's not really model specific. It came with a 325 bar and chain. A friend told me to convert to a 3/8" bar and chain so I did. I did that brand new at the dealer so I never knew how a 325 would do. This is the important part, my MS271 - 3/8 is NOT a "P" or low profile. Im quite sure this tool will NOT work on a 271 3/8" or 325". NOW, i will order one of these because I have two Stihl MS 170s. I run both of them with 3/8 P" (or low profile) chain. Make sure that you look at your bar and make sure it says 3/8 P" or 3/8" low profile. NOW again, i said that I am ordering one of these 2 in 1 Stihl sharpening tools because I already have one for my MS 261CM. It has a 325 chain and the Stihl brand 2 in 1 tool is fantastic. Unfortunately you must have a separate tool for each size bar/chain! My MS261CM is the best saw out there! And I am going to leave the 325 bar and chain on it, cuts like a hot knife through butter. Its like the difference between a VW and Bentley.
