    OK, not great

Ok, but not one of her best. The book starts out with an exciting suspense/horror prelude. Then I slogged through most of the book hoping to get to the bit that was described in the beginning of the book. And I do mean slogged. Very slow going. Maggie seems a bit vapid to me. Liam invites her to go with him to his family reunion. Then, as soon as they enter he walks off and leaves her alone, so she does her own exploring and finds her stepmother from more than 20 years ago. There are no truly complex characters. Maggie's stepmother seems like someone who would be fun to be around. At first, Earl is Liam's friend but as the book progresses, Earl gets more and more weird. The book was very well edited. There is violence, there is mild profanity but no "F" bombs, there is no sex. Most of the book is a cozy mystery with the thriller coming closer to the end.

More Cozy Mystery than Thriller, but an Engaging Tale

It’s been a while since I’ve read a book by Mary Higgins Clark. I was anxious to try this one because of a plot thread regarding Victorian burial customs. Maggie Holloway reconnects with her stepmother, Nuala, at a cocktail party. The two women haven’t seen each other since Maggie was a child but their connection is immediate. Shortly afterward, Nuala is murdered by an unknown assailant and Maggie inherits her home. The plot involves residents of Latham Manor, a luxury living center for seniors, complete with medical staff on the premises. Maggie becomes friendly with one of Nuala’s friends, only to have that woman die unexpectedly. She soon realizes that several residents of Latham Manor have passed away in a short amount of time, and while visiting their graves discovers Victorian burial bells by their tombstones. Although this isn’t the main thread of the story, it adds an interesting twist. There are a lot of characters to keep track of, and the book bogs a bit as each are introduced and their connections to the others become apparent. The story starts with a bang then slows down for quite a while before gaining momentum again, but it’s worth sticking with. While I deduced the identity of the killer around the 60% mark, it was entertaining to see the mystery unravel. The suspenseful ending, along with a nice wrap for the various plot threads made for a satisfying read.

My First (And Last) Mary Higgins Clark Book

*by A***R on Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2018*

Several friends highly recommended this author’s books, so I finally bought this—my first Mary Higgins Clark novel—in September 2017. I’ve picked it up more than a dozen times and managed to read to the 25% mark.By page 49, approximately twenty-five characters are introduced—most wealthy & many aspiring to be wealthier. Too many characters and it’s only page 49.Oddly, I didn’t learn Maggie’s surname until page 24. Had I not been seeking it, I’d have missed it.The author introduces a world of excesses—which Maggie and the other characters inhabit. Reminded me of old TV shows like Dynasty.Thought balloon, Maggie: “I hate cocktail parties.” Well, of course it’s merely a cocktail party if you leave The Four Seasons before dinner . . . in the Grill Room. Also, not excusing herself to the host/hostess and abandoning her date. Maggie likes Il Tinello (said Liam), went to boarding school & Carnegie-Mellon, and rubs along comfortably with wealthy blue bloods in Newport. Maggie is used a wealthy life, seems to be a perfect person, everyone seems to love/like her, and three men are lusting for her. Before the plot managed to manifest itself, I was bored. DNF the Kindle version and same for the Audible version.
