I believe that these are one of the best ways to hold the outside corners of trim while installing. They do leave a small hole behind, however in most cases this is smaller then the hole left by the nails. I have other carpenters ask me on a regular basis where I got these after they see how well they work for the job. I have even had painters that liked them because using these and glue on an outside corner no nails are required to keep the corner tight. Just leave the clamp on long enough for the glue to set and you will get a perfect miter. For that reason i recommend the 12 pack because you can leave the clamps on your corners while continuing to work on other corners. You can use these by hand but it is a bit difficult. It was the absolute deciding factor, at the time of purchase. If you do crown moulding, using this product is the way to go. **Q: Do they leave any mark or depression in the wood?** A: Yes, they do leave a very small indentation on the wood. I put a small drop of water on the indentation and let the wood swell. I then sand the wood for finishing and the indentation all but disappeares. **Q: can you just squeze them with your hand ???** A: They are very stiff springs that seem to be more easily controlled with the pliers. The jaws of the pliers open the springs when squeezed. You then position the sprung and release. If you have the hand strength it would be possible to use without the special pliers. Alternatively regular pliers could be used but it may be awkward. **Q: What material are the spring clamps made of, steel, titanium, aluminum?** A: Definitely not aluminum or titanium. Not sure what kind of steel but super strong and tough. I would consider this a high end installation and fine/finish carpentry tool. They apply a lot of good clamping pressure till your glue sets up. They also tremendously speed up alignment of your joint. More notably with crown molding these clamps will hold your outside corners right where they need to be until you can nail off your crown. I also use these two pre-assemble crown molding on a table before installing on cabinetry.
