Pieces are a nice heavier weight, and it all fits well in the tote bag, and it even room for a separate timer we included in the gift. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great chess set, great customer service *by on Reviewed in the United States February 17, 2021* I bought this chess set so I can teach my grandchildren to play. It's perfect for that, and it would be just fine for any use right up to tournaments. The chessmen feel good, the board looks good, and I expect them to last a long time.The "board" is a roll-up vinyl mat with 2 1/4 inch squares, exactly as required for tournaments. It has rank and file markings along the outside edges, which is great for folks learning to play. The board smelled a little "plasticy" when it first arrived, but I left it out and unrolled for a couple of days, and the smell went away. I got the green-and-white board, which is pretty common in club and tournament games. The only downside with ordering through Amazon instead of directly from the House of Staunton's website is that the board and the bag have to be the same color. I like green, so I'm OK with that, but I wouldn't have wanted to take red-and-white board in order to get a red bag.The chessmen are the traditional Staunton design most chess players have seen and used. These are "triple weighted", and that's just the right amount of heft. They don't fall over by accident, like hollow or open-bottom men, but they also don't go "bam" when you place them. They're tournament size - the king is 3 3/4 inches high, and the rest of the set is scaled to match. They feel nice and solid, and they've got a felt cover over the base. Other reviewers have said that there can be small quality issues with them, and that happened to me. The weights in one knight were loose, rattling around and annoying me. I used Amazon to send a message to the seller, explaining this, and they responded the next day that they'd ship me a replacement. It arrived about a week later, and it's just fine.The "quiver bag" is really basic - you gently roll the board into a tube, slide it into the bag, and then you can put the chessmen inside the tube. I saved the ziploc bags that the men where shipped in, and use those to keep them from rattling around. I don't know if having the men loose would damage them, but why find out the hard way? The seller says the bag will also hold a chess clock, and there's certainly enough room, but I don't want a clock, so I can't say for sure.All in all, I'm very pleased with the set, with the price, and with the help I got replacing a knight. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent value for the price *by on Reviewed in the United States April 18, 2026* We use this set almost every day.
