Yes, it's simplified, and no, it's not as good as the original, but it's perfect for a beginning reader to get a sense of the story and experience the thrill of sounding out words to make a story. Review: Fun Read-aloud - My grandchildren (6 and 9) are really into pirates but not ready for the original version, so I downloaded this to my kindle. It was a fun read for me, doing all the voices; and the kids loved it, begging to hear more. Sometimes they would take turns reading aloud too. It was a great introduction to pirate stereotypes. (We also watched some old film versions as well as Disney’s Treasure Planet.) My 7-year old son's reading level has now reached this level but he still needs to be challenged to actually read books at this level. Hopefully this version of the story will capture his imagination. I read an even simpler illustrated version to him as bedtime stories when he was younger and he loved it. One quibble is that the cover that actually came with the the Kindle edition that I bought doesnt have the more exciting cover shown in the Amazon website. Instead, it is a boring text only cover.
