If you're a beginner, it presents ACCESS 2007 in a step-by-step manner so that you can quickly be using the software. If you've used previous versions of ACCESS, this book identifies the differences (some are improvements, some are still waiting to be "characterized" in my mind < grin >) between the previous versions and this new version; as a developer, this was very useful for me to quickly learn of what's new and how it's new.Lots of sample databases...and code...and tips/tricks... and a PDF version of the book with extra chapters on the accompanying CD.The style is similar to those in John's previous books, so you'll like this one if you've read the earlier ones. Definitely worth the money...the first time you need to learn "how do I do this?", it'll pay for itself in the time it would take you to learn "by trial and error". ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars Great Reference Guide! *by D***E on Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2014* I love all of the Inside Out Reference Manuals and this one is just has helpful to me in my collection. It gives great information especially when learning how to use the VBA. Of course, you can't have just one reference guide but, this one will be my go to first. It was also nice to spend just a few dollars on and get a great looking copy free of highlighting as well. This manual does assume that you have prior knowledge of Access but, don't let that stop you from obtaining this manual if you don't use it often. You also find many ways to use it outside of an office situation for home and for study. ### ⭐⭐⭐ 3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Access Book (even though the CD is glitchy) *by J***S on Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2011* I had the 2003 version of this text and wore it out. It was the one Access book I read the most, and I had several. I bought this version when my department upgraded to Access 2007 (this year!). I still think it is the best all around Access book on the market.If you don't know already, then I'll tell you. Access 2007 is a completely different animal from 2003. Not only does it look different and act different, it has features and capabilities that 2003 never dreamed of. I'm not an Access pro, but I'm not a rank beginner either. I started with chapter one and I'm working my way through the entire book. I'm surprised at how much I've learned already. The book is particularly useful on the many occasions when I yank it off the shelf to answer one of those "How in the heck do I do [x]?" questions. Not all books can perform equally well as a comprehensive textbook and a handy reference guide. This one does.However, the one glaring weakness of this text is the accompanying CD. Some of the sample databases on the CD trigger errors in the VBA code when I try to open them. Apparently, I don't know enough VBA to figure out what's wrong, so they're basically useless. Other sample databases can't be used at all unless you first install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express, then figure out how to configure it, and the sample databases, so that the sample databases will open. Good luck with that, I still haven't managed it. In other words, the entire CD is basically a no-go. Without the examples, it's often difficult to follow along with explanations in the text. If you don't have a copy of a database that you can experiment with, I suggest you create one as you go. Save extra copies of it just in case you accidentally kill one. With a better CD I would have rated this text 5 stars instead of 3.One more thing. This book will teach you how to use a piece of database software. It is not intended to be a textbook on database design. If you have no familiarity with relational databases and how to properly design them, I doubt that this or any other Access book will help you very much. This is one area in which a grounding in the fundamentals is essential. It will save you a ton of frustration and dozens of hours of wasted effort.
