After sacking his former brothers in arms over some dispute or other, Ben really had something to prove with this album. Apparently not one to shy away from a challenge, Burnley really comes out fighting here, crafting an optimistic and defiant record that sounds superficially similar to BB's earlier works, but with an added kick and clarity to the sound that makes for one heck of a statement of intent. The production, handled by Burnley, is amazing. You can really hear those Tool-esque bass lines, and the guitars sound crisp and crunchy. New drummer Shaun Foist is also a fantastic addition to BB, adding a new dimension in places with his inventive playing. But what about the songs? Well, they're amazing. Failure and Angels Fall make a great opening salvo, showing that after a 6 year absence BB can't be counted out. "Hollow" is quite simply one of the best songs Ben has ever penned. It takes the classic elements of the BB sound and takes them to a whole new level. In fact, that's a good summary of the album as a whole. Knowing he was coming into this off the back foot, Burnley absolutely upped his game and improved the integral elements of the music, while pushing himself into new areas in places (Ashes of Eden). This album netted Ben his first ever number one record, and for good reason. Both commercially and critically, this is career-defining. TO the untrained ear, this might sound like their older works but on a deeper level, this is a huge step up. Review: Worth the wait - It's been 6 years since Dear Agony was released and I've been missing BB ever since. I can now happily say that they're back, and on top form. This album is absolutely fantastic and borrows influences from older albums like Saturate, as well as taking the vocal and instrumental styles of Dear Agony and Phobia. The album has a very good range of songs from slower songs to heavy beat, shout at your steering wheel songs.
